In the program "Artists and Stage" organized by HTV, People's Artist Xuan Quan expressed his happiness when he was awarded the title of People's Artist by the State in the 10th batch along with many artists of the Ho Chi Minh City Hat Boi Art Theater, including People's Artist Thanh Trang - his wife.
As one of the mainstay artists of the HCM City Opera House, although he has retired, he is still working hard to pass on his skills to the younger generation. Three years ago, the program "Mai Vang Nhan Ai" visited him and gave him gifts to help him overcome his illness.
People's Artist Xuan Quan
With a three-generation tradition of being attached to the art of hát bội, he has many memorable roles and many roles that have won gold medals at performances and festivals of tuong art. The most famous of which is the role of Trịnh Ân (play "Trạm Trịnh Ân").
"Thanks to this role, I and my family lived in poverty for 15 years. At that time, it was very difficult, many people persuaded me to leave hát bội and switch to Ho Quang opera to make a living, because hát bội was starting to narrow its audience, but I still insisted on staying loyal to hát bội. The role of Trịnh Ân was loved by the audience, so the troupe was invited to perform everywhere, from the stage to temples, singing at Ky Yen ceremonies. I had an income to support my family and persevere in my career" - People's Artist Xuan Quan confided.
He confided: "Three years ago, I discovered that I had neck pain. After going to the doctor, I found out that I had nasopharyngeal cancer. Currently, I am undergoing treatment. When I received the surprise gift from the "Mai Vang Nhan Ai" program, I was very touched. I have tried my best to treat it and achieved results to continue to pass on my profession to the young generation of actors who love hát bội. After winning the noble title, I have to try even harder."
People's Artist Xuan Quan and People's Artist Thanh Trang - his wife
Currently suffering from stage 3 nasopharyngeal cancer, People's Artist Xuan Quan remains optimistic and maintains his spirit. Despite his illness, he still performs normally, still goes to the theater to take on supporting roles and continues to teach at the University of Theatre and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City.
"I have had radiation therapy and have had check-ups every month. When I reach retirement age, I have to go back, but I am lucky to have a wife who is in the same profession, and both of us are still invited by the theater to come back and give lectures, continuing the task of passing on the torch to the next generation. I specialize in playing martial arts roles, my wife is a commercial actress, whenever young actors need something to apply to their roles, I pass on my profession. Hat Boi now needs many spearheads to promote, bring it to schools, and reach young audiences. I am very happy to be able to accompany the Ho Chi Minh City Hat Boi Art Theater - the place where I have spent my youth until today" - People's Artist Xuan Quang expressed.
