Smartwatch sales continue to grow

According to the latest report from market research firm Canalys, the number of smart wearable devices (including smartwatches) shipped in the second quarter of 2024 increased by 0.2% compared to the same period in 2023. Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi are the brands with double-digit growth, while Apple decreased by 5%. Another report by Counterpoint Research in the second quarter of 2023 recorded an 11.1% growth in the market.

"We forecast double-digit growth in smartwatch shipments in the second half of 2024, driven by new sales campaigns from Apple, Samsung and Google," said Cynthia Chen, research director at Canalys. With quarterly and annual growth, the smartwatch market is being eyed by many technology companies around the world looking for a piece of the pie.

Young Vietnamese people tend to use smart watches because they have many modern features.

Experts from research firm IDC cited a report showing that more and more users are using smartwatches. This trend is not only in the world but also taking place in Vietnam. A survey by Herbalife showed that up to 83% of Vietnamese people have changed their priority concerns to health, focusing on tracking their movements as well as more comprehensive body health indicators after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr. Phan Tran Thanh, representative of FPT Shop system, said that the smart watch industry has increased by about 30% compared to 2023, and if only considering smartwatch products for children, sales have doubled. Previously, in 2023, a number of other mobile retail systems in Vietnam also recorded a similar increase in sales compared to the same period last year from the smart watch business segment, showing that this product line still maintains a positive consumption level.

There are many price options on the market today, from a few hundred thousand dong for products from lesser-known brands to several million dong or tens of millions of dong, meeting the diverse needs of users.

The intersection of tradition and modernity

Despite impressive growth and attracting more and more users, smart watches have not yet completely convinced users to use this product daily and have not replaced the unique appeal of traditional watches - devices considered as fashion accessories mixed with art.

According to Mr. Yuansong Gong, Vice President of Healthcare and Wearables, Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), to win over customers, smartwatches in particular and wearables in general do not just stop at health monitoring features.

"In addition to features, manufacturers must also pay attention to fashion. We believe that smartwatches must now also be fashion-oriented, so that watches become a decorative item, suitable for aesthetics, expressing each person's personality and taste," said Mr. Yuangsong Gong.

Fashion, rarity and mechanical details still create the unique appeal of traditional watches in a market context highlighted by the trend of health-tracking smartwatches.

Mr. Bui Tuan Minh, CEO of LPD luxury watch distribution company, said that young people in general prefer smartwatches, so the influence of this device on consumer trends cannot be denied. However, there are still many people who prefer traditional watches, choosing to use them in combination for each situation, rather than having a clear separation between the two waves, completely switching from one type to the other.

"Currently, users still love the simplicity of mechanical watches, or traditional watches in general, because of the sophisticated craftsmanship of mechanical machines. Each different traditional watch will match different outfits, so customers can own many designs to suit different occasions," Mr. Bui Tuan Minh shared on the sidelines of the launch event of the Orient Vietnam Special Edition 2025 collection.

The rarity of some traditional watch versions is also an attraction for users. For example, the Orient Star model in the above collection was only produced in 304 pieces (signifying the National Reunification Day, April 30, 1975), while the remaining 3 Orient models have a quantity of 2,025 pieces, corresponding to the year 2025 - the 50th anniversary of the National Reunification.
