Harry Kewell has arrived in Hanoi , ready for a new journey with the capital team Hanoi FC. This is also the second time he has come to Vietnam, after the first time in 2007 when he played with the Australian team in the quarter-finals of the 2007 Asian Cup.
As head coach of Hanoi FC, Kewell said: "I think one of the interesting things about football is being able to access many different places and cultures. I am very grateful for football because it has brought me to truly beautiful lands that I always want to return to. The same with Hanoi, my experience at that time was really wonderful."
However, the 47-year-old former player also honestly shared that although Hanoi is a beautiful city, he has not explored much because he had to focus on competing in 2007. Moreover, because Australia lost and was eliminated after the group stage of the Asian Cup, "the whole team did not feel very happy".
"I really want to experience more, learn about the changes of the city when I have time. I love food and enjoy tasting delicious dishes. The only thing I can't eat is mushrooms, that's it, I want to try everything else. But football must be the number one priority, now I will only focus on football and Hanoi Football Club," Kewell said.
The new coach of Hanoi FC also declared that he is "ready to accept and get used to the new life. Just enjoy it. If you can do that, your life will be much easier," he said.
Kewell also said that the first time he worked with Asian players was when he was an assistant at Celtic, where there were several Japanese players such as Daizen Maeda, Kyōgo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate, and South Korea's Yang Hyun Jun. "The common point of Asian players is that they have a really extraordinary effort," he commented, "I wanted to go to a place where the players have a desire to learn and want to improve themselves. As far as I know, Vietnam is that place. The players here have a desire to improve. It's my job to help them improve every day. When they improve, the team will improve. For me, the best thing about being a coach is creating an environment where players want to come in and learn.
I am very excited and looking forward to the challenges ahead. Hopefully, together we will create a great atmosphere and bring Hanoi Football Club back to its original position. That is what I want and the reason I am here."
