Hill D1 was one of the important bases in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954. Today, after 7 centuries, this place has become a tourist destination for many tourists to learn about the history of the nation and the great heroic victory of Dien Bien Phu.
During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, the D1 stronghold was an important stronghold in the eastern defensive hill range of the French Colonialists, tasked with protecting the center of the stronghold group, and was the target of the Vietnam People's Army in the second attack that began on the afternoon of March 30, 1954. After 2 days of fighting with the attacks and counterattacks of both our side and the French, the 209th Regiment, 312th Division completely controlled this stronghold, then held the position and supported other units in destroying the remaining strongholds, contributing to the overall victory of the entire campaign. Although they were not soldiers who directly participated in the battle, the Dien Bien soldiers still could not forget the fierce battle of their comrades on D1 hill.
The former D1 hill base was chosen as the location for the Victory Monument. This is a project with deep historical, humanistic and spiritual values, with great significance for a victory that “resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world”. The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument today is not only a destination for victory and peace , but also a highlight in the historical tourism journey and a symbol of the spirit of determination to fight and win.
The ancient relics have now been built and restored with the meaning of the war, such as: the ceremonial axis leading up to the Monument consists of 320 steps, with 3 large landings symbolizing the 3 attacks of the campaign; on both sides of the ceremonial axis are 56 milestones made of Thanh Hoa green stone, symbolizing the 56 days and nights of "digging mountains, sleeping in tunnels, enduring rain, eating rice balls" of our soldiers in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Surrounding the Monument is a landscape route, including: a system of surrounding walking paths and a lookout symbolizing the 5 main corps participating in the Campaign. With that meaning, the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument is a place attracting tourists from all over the world.
Although the war has long since ended, the traces of the bombed battlefields of the past are still preserved and protected. Today, along with the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument, other historical sites such as Muong Thanh Bridge, A1 Hill, Hong Cum, Him Lam ... have become landmarks and evidence for the sustainable existence and development of the heroic land of Dien Bien Phu./.
