Here, creative director Olivier Rousteing revisits his Spring 2013 collection for the French fashion house, giving his decades-old Floridian designs a modern makeover.
For his Pre-Fall 2024 collection, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing looked back 10 years and took references from the Miami-inspired Spring 2013 collection for the French luxury house.
The line was largely inspired by the pastel color schemes and art deco design language of the Floridian capital, as well as the Elba villa that the house's founder, Pierre Balmain, commissioned from Leonardo Ricci.
For Rousteing, the collection was “real Balmain.” In a conversation with Vogue, he said, “There are some collections where I don’t focus on the house aesthetic, and there are some where I focus on the house aesthetic. This one is full of it! There’s a lot of joy and a lot of confidence. And in a time when there seems to be a lot of attention to quiet luxury, we shouldn’t forget that maybe not everyone just wants a camel cashmere turtleneck.”
Throughout the collection, pastel bags complemented plaid coats, and pops of teal and bright yellow provided a welcome contrast to the otherwise black-and-white ensembles. Palm trees played a key role in defining the illustrative character of the line – particularly a crystal-encrusted coat, which gave the aforementioned foliage a shimmering touch.
In the details, the logo-filled bags are set against Miami cityscapes and colorful stripes that are ideal for the city’s boardwalks. Overall, this is a line for those who want to hit Miami in the summer just before fall.
