Online fraud remains a major risk to users during Tet

Lunar New Year is always an important occasion in the social life of Vietnamese people. However, as the Internet, smartphones and social networks become increasingly essential to each individual, the risks and dangers of information security loss for users are greater, especially when many people do not have enough knowledge and skills to protect themselves in the digital environment.

Speaking to VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Head of Technology Research Department, National Cyber Security Association said that the biggest risk that individual users face during Lunar New Year this year is online fraud. Common forms of fraud during this time are cheap airline ticket sales, online lucky money receiving, cheap spring travel programs, money transfer fraud from abroad, etc.

Although these forms of fraud are not new, according to Mr. Son, bad guys can use previously collected personal information from victims to create specific scenarios, making it difficult for victims to guard against and fall into traps.

According to Mr. Be Khanh Duy, Head of the Southern Region Expert Services Team of Vietnam Cyber Security Company - VSEC, the attack method that is predicted to be used the most during this Lunar New Year will be Phishing and fraud attacks. Because during the upcoming Tet holiday, there will be many activities and programs such as incentives and promotions.

Attackers can impersonate organizations and businesses to send SMS and emails with New Year greetings and promotional programs to users to trick them into logging into fake websites to steal information or trick users into downloading malicious software, thereby attacking and appropriating assets.

To avoid scams, experts recommend that users pay attention to raising awareness and knowledge about cyber security, verifying information and sources, being careful when sharing personal information online, using strong and multi-layered passwords, checking and monitoring their financial transactions and online activities.

To safely transact and entertain during Tet, expert Vu Ngoc Son recommends that users strictly follow safety principles when going online. Do not rush to believe the information received, need to verify it carefully. Do not install apps of unknown origin, do not click on links sent via text messages or emails. Do not transfer money to strangers.

“In case an acquaintance asks you to do a transaction or borrow money, you need to verify it through an independent channel such as calling, meeting in person, or asking relatives of the person you are talking to. These verification methods will take time but will help you avoid losing a large amount of money ,” Mr. Vu Ngoc Son added.

Secure your account, share your insights

Currently, many Vietnamese users are spending a lot of time participating in activities on social networks. During the Lunar New Year holiday, the time individuals spend on social networks, news and entertainment sites tends to increase. Understanding and having solutions to ensure safety when transacting and entertaining online becomes increasingly necessary for each individual.

According to experts, users need to note that social networks are also indirect tools for exploiting information because of the large number of users and the large amount of personal information posted. Therefore, to be safe when using social networks, in addition to setting up security features for social network accounts, users need to pay special attention to protecting private information and not sharing information excessively.

In particular, users need to be aware that posting any information on social networks means being known by many people, and can have long-term effects.

Experts also emphasize that paying attention to the security of online accounts and sharing information wisely are important factors for users to protect their own information when participating in the digital environment.

Online accounts store important personal and financial information, so users need to take some steps to protect it optimally: Use a password that is at least 8 characters long, including uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters; update security software; use 2-step verification; use different passwords for accounts; do not share login information and passwords with others and do not access untrusted websites.

To avoid information leaks, users need to be careful when sharing personal information online such as personal photos, full names, email addresses, bank accounts, PINs and passwords, family and friends photos. Personal information, schedules, and important documents should be kept private; photos and videos of yourself and your family should only be shared with family members. Information shared with everyone should only be limited to product and service reviews, giving opinions to help others make appropriate choices.

In addition, users also need to follow some principles to safely use online payment applications during Tet, which are: Use "genuine" transaction portals; keep personal information confidential; set a secure password for Internet Banking accounts; register to use messaging services, proactive balance inquiries; register to use one-time OTP passwords to have a strong security barrier to support safe transactions.
