Many parents affirm that it is impossible to prohibit children from using phones and participating in social networking sites, especially when we are living in an increasingly developed “digital society” like today. However, we need to pay attention to controlling time and somewhat controlling the content on social networks that children access.
At the 2023 Provincial Children's Forum, the issue of students using phones and social networks was also mentioned by many delegates. Student Nguyen Thi Lam Ngoc, class 9/2, Thong Hoa Secondary School, Cau Ke District expressed: Social networks have many advantages, but the consequences they cause are not small, if you spend too much time viewing content on social networks, including unhealthy, unverified content, it can be harmful to your mental and physical health.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Huong, Member of the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee, Head of the Youth and School Committee, shared: With the development of technology today, it is inevitable that children have early access to phones and social networks. Whether the use of social networks is good or bad depends on the users themselves. The problem is to control the time and dosage, and not become a "slave" to social networks.
From a parent's perspective, Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Huong shared that social networks are increasingly becoming a place to provide news and knowledge about all areas of social life. Among them, there are many pages that teach life skills, scientific knowledge, foreign languages, sports, etc. to help users have the basic skills necessary in today's life. At the same time, it helps connect and interact with friends, family, and the community, contributing to promoting the process of international integration. All parents want the best for their children, hoping that they can keep up with social trends, so they let their children have early access to smart devices such as computers, mobile phones, and access to social networks.
However, it should be noted that allowing children to access social networks is for them to develop in a positive direction and to avoid letting them get carried away, addicted to social networks, which negatively affects their health and spirit. To do so, parents need to closely monitor and guide their children to use social networks effectively and safely to avoid the negative effects that social networks cause. Parents need to monitor and manage their children's time using social networks, and can use social networks for entertainment and learning new knowledge after completing all assigned homework and work.
Student Chau Duong Kim Thoai, class 7/1, Ngu Lac Secondary School, Duyen Hai District shared: I know that social media addiction also affects students' health. Using social media for a long time causes eye strain, insomnia, and less participation in physical activities and sports, so I really hope that the school and leaders at all levels will pay attention to creating more playgrounds for students to participate in, limiting the use of phones and social media.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Huong added: there is still a group of young people in general, children in particular, who access a lot of unofficial information and bad social evils through social networks. Therefore, Tra Vinh Provincial Youth Union has directed the Youth Union and Teams at all levels in the province to implement many specific solutions, such as strengthening political and ideological education, ethics, and lifestyle among cadres, union members, and team members. At the same time, focusing on organizing useful, fun, and safe activities during the summer to help children limit social networks such as: organizing life skills, social practice and physical training, traffic safety skills, preventing and combating accidents and drowning, propagating and educating children about using and participating in social networks in a truly safe and healthy way.
At the same time, deploy students to participate in programs and competitions organized by the Central Council of Young Pioneers such as: the program to improve foreign language skills for children with the theme "Vietnamese Children - Reaching out to the world", the program "Vietnamese Children - Study well, practice hard" and "Vietnamese Youth - Cultivate virtue and talent, lead the future" .... to help students approach digital transformation, have fun, practice and study.
In addition, consolidate and develop more playgrounds for children, actively mobilize social resources to serve the care and education of children and proactively advise authorities at all levels to invest in facilities and build and repair playgrounds for children in residential areas. Organize useful summer activities, help children have suitable playgrounds associated with physical and mental activities and reduce the time spent using electronic devices, away from social networks.
Distinguishing between the pros and cons, controlling the time students spend on social networks, and encouraging students to behave civilly on the internet is extremely important. Hopefully, the attention of families, schools, and the Youth Union will help students have safe and healthy directions for using social networks, and exploit the benefits of social networks to study well.
