In the hot and dazzling April weather, people from all over the country still flock here - the old battlefield of Dien Bien Phu with gratitude and pride. People follow each other to visit and offer incense at the Martyrs' Temple at Dien Bien Phu Battlefield. It was the third time in the morning that I climbed the high stairs leading to the Temple with other tourist groups, but in each introductory sentence of Ms. Thuy Duong, the guide of Dien Bien Provincial Relic Management Board, there was still a lot of emotion.
In traditional Thai ethnic costumes, with a small stature, Ms. Duong led the group of visitors to stop in front of the typical designs of the Temple, each detail conveying its own meaning and story. In front of the tunnel door leading from the meditation lake to the main space of the Temple, Ms. Duong raised her voice, sometimes low, sometimes high, to introduce: “We see that the two sides of the tunnel door are designed very massively like interlocking chains, showing the solidity of the Dien Bien Phu stronghold group arranged and spread out by the French army. If our Vietnamese army wants to win, it must overcome that difficulty and danger. This tunnel is likened to a life and death pass, passing through 9 deaths and 1 life, showing the fierceness of the war, maybe one way out and never coming back...”.
The tunnel is not long but dark, in contrast to the blazing sun outside, each visitor admires every detail, quietly walks through the tunnel in contemplation, admiration, and recalls the fierce war days, but "not discouraged, not regretting the youth" of the fathers' generation.
At the Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum, the tour guides are passionate about each and every introduction and each group of visitors. Although the Museum welcomes thousands of visitors every day during peak months, and opens some nights during the week to meet the needs of visitors, the tour guides have to work overtime and continuously, but they always maintain their professionalism in front of visitors. Ms. Lo Thi Kim has overcome the pressure of work with the joy and pride of a daughter of the heroic homeland of Dien Bien. With that pride, Ms. Kim conveys the emotions and heroic spirit of the Campaign into each introduction. She shared: “Along with researching and collecting good and meaningful documents and stories associated with artifacts to create more emotions and excitement for listeners, I also pay attention to the way I explain, guide, adjust my tone and expression to suit each group of visitors (students, young people, the elderly, veterans...). Many groups of visitors have interacted and praised, making me feel even more proud and trying harder, contributing to leaving a good impression with profound historical stories that easily enter the minds of visitors from near and far.”
In addition to information about developments and "hard" historical figures, which are indispensable when mentioning a relic or artifact, the tour guides also proactively seek out and collect valuable details and touching stories from witnesses and reputable books and newspapers to make the explanation more vivid and inspiring. Recently, the bride (a military medic) held her wedding right at De Castries' Bunker after the victory on May 7 - Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Toan returned to Dien Bien. The staff of the Provincial Relic Management Board warmly welcomed her and listened to her tell more details, share her thoughts and feelings. From there, there were more documents and real stories to introduce to visitors. In addition to the above transmission method, many tour guides also appropriately quote famous poems and passages that are associated with the campaign, with the heroism of national history to "push" emotions and create closeness for visitors.
National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 and the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory, the old battlefield destinations are always crowded with tourists. At its peak, the Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum welcomed nearly 7,000 visitors/day. The relics in the complex (including A1 hill, De Castries bunker, D1 hill - Victory Monument, F hill - Martyrs' Temple, Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Headquarters, artillery road relic) welcomed more than 10,000 visitors/day. Therefore, along with the existing tour guides, the Relic Management Board has guided, trained, and received support from more than 30 volunteers, tour guides who are students and local people, to serve tourists attentively.
Whether they are professional tour guides or volunteers, they all try to bridge the past and present, conveying to visitors from all over the world historical stories with lots of emotions, contributing to spreading the spirit, national pride and further lighting the flame of the immortal revolutionary tradition.
