Young leader of Tu Tam

I wrote an article about the Tu Tam volunteer group a few years ago, so I had the opportunity to meet Vo Thanh Man - Head of the Tu Tam volunteer group. It was quite a surprise because at that time Man was still a student at Soc Son High School, My Thuan commune, but he was the leader of a large volunteer group with many quality activities and programs.

Man said: “I came to volunteer work thanks to the charity lunch box I received when I took care of my grandmother in the hospital when I was 13 years old. I felt warm when I saw the joy of people in difficult circumstances when receiving charity lunch boxes. I also want to contribute to multiplying such kind deeds.” Thinking and doing, Man founded the Tu Tam charity group in 2018. Initially, the group's operating costs were contributed by 10 members, but now the group has hundreds of members, with the participation of many overseas Vietnamese.

This time, Man became a second-year student at Kien Giang University. Although he was busy with his studies, the young man still did a good job in volunteer work. Man and the Tu Tam volunteer group actively coordinated with communes, wards, and other charity groups to increase the scale and quality of charity programs and activities. In addition to maintaining the initial activities such as distributing free meals every weekend at hospitals; mobilizing gifts for poor households, scholarships for disadvantaged children on holidays, New Year, and opening ceremonies; establishing a zero-dong funeral fund to support funeral costs for those in difficult circumstances... Man also supported the construction of charity houses and bridges in remote and border communes. Up to now, the group has built 5 bridges and 2 charity houses. Not only in An Giang, recently, Man and members of the volunteer group went to the Central and Northern provinces to visit, organize zero-dong booths, and give rice and necessities to the poor.

The total cost of the projects and tasks that Man mobilizes to carry out each year is nearly 300 million VND, this is a number that proves the young man's "good hand" with charity programs. Man's dedication has reaped many "sweet fruits" not only for Man but also for the Tu Tam volunteer group. After more than 7 years of operation, Man and the volunteer group have been recognized and awarded certificates of merit by many agencies and organizations for their contributions to community activities.

Live with a compassionate heart

Mr. Tran Van Nhan, residing in Ranh Hat hamlet, Vinh Thuan commune, is an old farmer who works in the fields all year round, but in the minds of many local people, Mr. Nhan is like a "knight" because of his dedication to community activities. Mr. Nhan and the Phuoc Loc volunteer team have spent more than 13 years working hard to repair rural roads and bridges, and build local charity houses. The total value of the projects and works that Mr. Nhan and the local government mobilize people and philanthropists to carry out each year is more than 200 million VND. In addition, Mr. Nhan also mobilizes many other practical models such as exchanging nylon bags and plastic waste for rice, planting and caring for green hedges to contribute to beautifying the landscape, protecting the environment, and supporting funeral expenses for poor households, etc.

Coming from hardship, more than anyone, Mr. Nhan understands that sharing and helping is a way to encourage people to overcome difficulties and challenges. “I send my phone number to the households in the hamlet and commune so that when someone is sick and needs emergency care or has a traffic accident or is sick, they can call me for timely support. The same goes for people in need of burial, the coffin is delivered free of charge. Every program I participate in has clear financial disclosure, from which benefactors trust and support. Whatever I do, I closely cooperate with the government, departments, branches, especially the Red Cross, thanks to which the programs and activities are always successful,” Mr. Nhan said.

Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vinh Thuan Commune, Phan Thi The, shared: “Mr. Nhan and the Phuoc Loc Volunteer Team are shining examples in local volunteer work. In addition to public works, on holidays and Tet, Mr. Nhan also mobilizes hundreds of gifts for lonely elderly people, people with disabilities, orphans, etc., joining hands with the locality to do a good job of caring for the disadvantaged. Not only that, Mr. Nhan is also a prestigious person, exemplary in implementing movements such as voluntary blood donation, building new rural areas, ensuring security and order, limiting law violations and social evils in the area…”.
