That was when all 34 houses for the people of Avuong commune were completed as part of the "Quang Trung Campaign". At the celebration, alongside the local authorities, a large number of police officers and soldiers from the city and Avuong commune were invited by the people to stay and celebrate like family. Amidst the newly built houses, still smelling of fresh mortar, the villagers brought agricultural products and wild vegetables to treat the officers and soldiers who had spent months in the village, assisting in building houses and helping the people stabilize their lives after the floods.

A safe anchor point

In late 2025, the western mountainous region of the city suffered successive heavy rains, landslides, and flash floods. During this disaster response, the people of Avuong border commune were not alone, as they were always supported by police officers and other forces on duty. For more than half a month, during the floods, many officers and soldiers provided support by assisting in relocating property and evacuating people from dangerous areas; at the same time, they mobilized forces to stay in villages, helping people overcome the disaster and quickly stabilize their lives.

Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Van Thin, Head of the Avuong Commune Police, said that after the floods, officers and soldiers continued to stay close to the people, ready to assist them at any time when ordered. The journeys through the forest and across landslide areas to deliver food supplies to the people have made many officers and soldiers feel even more strongly the close bond between the military and the people in this border region.

“A few months ago, we arrived in Aur, an isolated village deep in the protected forest, more than 25km walk from the commune center. After the natural disaster, the only road through the mountains was slippery, so my comrades and I carried relief supplies, promptly bringing food and provisions to the villagers,” Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Van Thin recounted.

But this wasn't the first time the police officers of Avương commune had come to Aur. Before the election of representatives to the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term, dozens of officers and soldiers were deployed through the forest to the village to support the local government and people in preparing for the big event. During that mission, the police force also incorporated legal education and encouraged people to raise their awareness of complying with regulations on security and order, and maintaining social safety in the land border area.

Mr. Alang Del, Head of Aur village, said that in recent times, many meaningful activities have been organized by the local government and police, contributing to making people's lives less difficult and arduous. Recognizing the remote and rugged nature of the area, during village meetings, village elders and officials regularly educate and encourage people to abide by the law, raise awareness against the tricks of criminals, and especially resolutely prevent drug-related crimes from infiltrating the area. "That is the trust that the people of Aur place in the local government and police force," Mr. Alang Del confided.

"A shield" at the border

Located on the border, Avuong commune borders Tay Giang and Dong Giang communes (Da Nang city), Long Quang and A Luoi 4 communes (Hue city), and Ka Lo village (Ka Lum district, Sekong province, Laos). This area serves as both a hub for trade and a potential breeding ground for cross-border crime, especially drug trafficking. In response to the need to maintain sovereignty and ensure security and order in the border region, the People's Committee of Avuong commune has recently directed its departments, agencies, and organizations to strengthen coordination and enhance their responsibilities in drug prevention and control.

In May 2025, based on the practical needs of the area, the "Border Shield" model was implemented with the goal of mobilizing the strength of the entire political system and the people in 16 villages to participate in building a drug-free area; proactively preventing threats early and from afar, creating a stable environment for socio-economic development.

According to Major Nguyen Huu Khanh, Deputy Head of the Avuong Commune Police, since the model was launched, the police force has coordinated 16 propaganda campaigns in 16 villages, attracting more than 2,300 people. More than 600 teachers and students from Nguyen Ba Ngoc Ethnic Boarding Secondary School and Bhalee Ethnic Boarding Primary School have been educated about the methods and tactics of drug criminals and prevention skills.

“We always effectively utilize the role of village elders and influential community leaders in disseminating information and mobilizing support. Through their closeness and influential voices, these elders actively encourage their fellow villagers to comply with laws on drug prevention and control, especially along the Vietnam-Laos border, contributing to maintaining security and order in the area,” said Major Nguyen Huu Khanh.

Mr. Bh'nướch Thơm, Secretary of the R'Cung village Party branch, said that the commune's police force regularly organizes night patrols, trekking through forests and wading through streams to reach villages and hamlets to disseminate information and encourage people to abide by the law and maintain security and order. Especially during the recent landslide, many officers and soldiers braved danger to promptly assist people in evacuating and rebuilding their homes, earning the respect and trust of the villagers.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Avương Briu Quân commune affirmed that, thanks to the decisive and coordinated involvement of the entire political system, the "Border Shield" model has gradually demonstrated clear effectiveness. The crime and drug situation in the area is well controlled, and the commune continues to maintain its drug-free status. Along with that, the "All People Protect National Security" movement is increasingly strengthened, contributing to maintaining peace in the border area so that people can work and produce with peace of mind, stay on their land and in their villages, and improve their quality of life.

Based on the achievements, the Avuong Commune Police were awarded the Emulation Flag "Leading Unit in the Emulation Movement for National Security" in 2025 by the Ministry of Public Security. In the coming time, the Avuong Commune Police will continue to advise the Commune People's Committee to maintain and improve the quality of the model, determined to maintain a peaceful border area, contributing to political stability and sustainable development in the western part of the city.
