Joy in Dao village

About 10 years ago, Vi Kem village, Trinh Tuong commune (formerly Coc My commune) was known by many people as a bright spot in crop restructuring with banana and cardamom. However, because these two types of plants are no longer suitable, the Dao Tuyen people have boldly switched to growing Seng cu rice, cinnamon, and taro, contributing to increasing income.

2025 is the first year that Vi Kem villagers switch to growing Seng cu rice. Standing next to the golden ripe rice field in the harvest season, Ms. Phan Thi Thu, a Dao Tuyen ethnic group, Vi Kem village happily said: This year, my family planted 5 kg of Seng cu rice. Although the weather was not very favorable, my family took care of it properly, so the rice still grew well, with few pests and diseases. It is expected that my family will harvest about 800 kg of Seng cu rice, selling for about 10 million VND.

Not only Ms. Thu's family, many households in Vi Kem village have switched from growing hybrid rice to growing Seng cu rice. Although it is the first crop, Seng cu rice grows well, the quality of the rice is delicious, the yield is 5.3 tons/ha, not inferior to the yield of Seng cu rice grown in Muong Vi land. With the selling price of 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg of rice, many households here are very excited.

Walking around Vi Kem village, we were amazed by the lush green color of taro.

Along with taro, cinnamon forests have also covered the hills. Every year, the Dao Tuyen people are busy going up the hills to weed cinnamon so that the plants can grow better. The lush green cinnamon forests are ready to be harvested, bringing hope to help people have a prosperous life.

From the direction of the commune government and actively learning the new economic model, the Dao people in Vi Kem village focused on developing three main crops: cinnamon, high-quality rice and taro.

Currently, the village has 100 hectares of cinnamon, 12 hectares of high-quality rice, including 5 hectares of Seng cu rice. From 2024, people will also grow 7 hectares of taro. From cinnamon alone, some households such as Dang Thanh Toan, Ly Van Phai, Ly Ngoc Hoa, Phan A Tam... earn over 100 million VND per year.
