Nintendo delays Switch 2 pre-orders due to new US taxes

Nintendo said it will postpone pre-orders for the Switch 2 console in the US due to the impact of a new series of tariffs recently announced by President Donald Trump related to Vietnam and China.

Speaking to CNBC , a Nintendo representative said: "The Switch 2 pre-order opening in the US, scheduled for April 9, will be postponed to assess the potential impact from tariffs and changing market conditions. We will announce an updated time later, but the official release date remains the same as June 5, 2025."

This is the first major response from a major technology company to Mr. Trump’s new tax policy, which could directly affect production costs and consumption in the US. Most electronics companies, including Nintendo, have factories in Asia, which is currently subject to the highest tariffs under the new policy. According to Reuters, the first generation Switch models were manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Nintendo has not yet revealed which country the Switch 2 production line is located in, however many previous sources confirmed that Vietnam and China are still the two countries that produce the generation of consoles that was just introduced this year.

In addition to delaying Switch 2 pre-orders, Nintendo has not announced whether the $449 US price will be adjusted due to the impact of the tax.

Gaming devices could increase in price by up to 50% if the new tariffs are fully implemented, according to the IPC trade group for the electronics industry.

Because of Trump's tariffs, will iPhones exceed 60 million VND?

Nintendo's announcement of the Switch 2 coincided with President Trump's announcement of a new set of tariffs, drawing even more attention from the tech world. The Switch 2 is a larger and more powerful upgrade to the original Switch, which has sold more than 150 million units worldwide since its launch in 2017.

The new model, which will cost more than the Switch 1's $300 starting price, will be powered by a custom chip developed by Nvidia. Players will be able to use the Switch 2 as a handheld or connect it to a TV for home gaming. Nintendo is expected to release the console in June, along with a new version of Mario Kart World .
