Reattaching 3 severed fingers for 5-year-old patient

NDO - Having 3 fingers of his left hand crushed and severed due to accidentally touching the sensor of an automatic cup capping machine at home, a 5-year-old boy received timely emergency surgery from doctors at the Orthopedic Department of the National Children's Hospital.

Taking the patient's medical history, the patient's family said: the incident happened when the child was reaching for something and accidentally put his left hand into the cup lid sealing machine with a sensor mechanism, causing the machine to operate and causing injury. As soon as the incident was discovered, the family found the severed fingers and took the child to the nearest hospital for first aid to stop the bleeding and then transferred him to the National Children's Hospital for further treatment.

At the Emergency and Poison Control Department, National Children's Hospital, after receiving the patient, doctors found very serious injuries with exposed and crushed bones, blood vessels and nerves in all three fingers I, II, III of the child's left hand.

Doctors from the Emergency and Poison Control Department consulted with orthopedic specialists, anesthesiologists, and resuscitation specialists, and decided to perform emergency surgery that night to save the child's finger.

The surgery lasted nearly 2 hours and produced good results. Doctors treated the crushed soft area, repositioned the nail, and sutured the finger, helping to avoid the risk of amputating the child's finger joint. This was a difficult surgery because the damaged area was the distal joint of the finger, the arteries and nerves were very small and easily damaged. If surgery was not performed early, the finger could become necrotic and lose its function completely.

After surgery, the child continued to be treated at the Orthopedic Department with antibiotics, pain relievers, anti-edema and daily wound dressing changes. After two weeks of treatment, the wound had dried and the fingertip had turned warm and pink. The child recovered well and was discharged from the hospital. However, to fully recover finger function, the child needed to continue to have the dressing changed and receive rehabilitation treatment in stages.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Vu Hoang, Department of Orthopedics, National Children's Hospital, who directly performed surgery on the child patient, said: Every year, the Orthopedics Department receives many cases of children with severed fingers who had to be hospitalized for treatment due to playing with firecrackers, using a knife to chop their hands, etc., and the fingers were successfully reattached.

How to give first aid and take the child to the hospital as soon as possible, and properly preserve the severed parts to facilitate later reattachment by:

First , wash the severed limb with saline or clean water. Absolutely do not wash with soap or chemicals.

Second , wrap the severed part tightly with gauze or clean cloth (be careful not to wrap too thickly) and put it in a sealed plastic box.

Third , place the box in a bucket of melting ice.
