On May 6, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Thinh Commune, Trang Bom District, Dong Nai , confirmed that he had received information that a household growing tissue-cultured bananas for export in the area was cut down by bad guys.

Previously, Mr. Tran Truc Minh (50 years old, living in Trang Bom district) reported that his family was taken advantage of by bad guys at night to cut down nearly 1,000 tissue-cultured banana stands for export.

Specifically, on May 5, Mr. Minh's family visited a banana garden of more than 10 hectares in Hung Binh hamlet, Hung Thinh commune, Trang Bom district and were surprised to discover that many banana stands had been cut down in large numbers. Through counting, Mr. Minh said that initially, about 1,000 banana stands were damaged.

"On average, each stall weighs about 20kg. 1,000 trees weigh about 20 tons. With the current price of 14,000 VND/kg, the estimated damage is up to hundreds of millions of VND," Mr. Minh confided.

According to the plan, the bananas were to be harvested and packed for export this week, but now they are damaged and cannot be sold. He said bitterly: "These bananas can only be used to feed pigs and cannot be sold anymore."

According to Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hien, after receiving the report, he directed the commune police force to investigate.

However, regarding the number of bananas damaged, Mr. Hien said that through initial counting, only more than 200 banana bunches were damaged. "Currently, the commune police are coordinating with professional units of Dong Nai Provincial Police to investigate," Mr. Hien said.

Capital of tissue culture banana cultivation for export

By the end of 2024, the banana growing area in Dong Nai will reach more than 18,300 hectares, an increase of more than 1,400 hectares over the same period in 2023. Dong Nai's banana acreage ranks first in the country and is considered the "capital" of tissue culture banana cultivation for export in the country.

This is the perennial crop with the fastest growing area in Dong Nai last year. The reason is that tissue-cultured bananas can be officially exported to the Chinese market at high prices.

Therefore, many households have converted annual crops and perennial crops with low economic value to tissue culture banana cultivation. Accordingly, the province's banana output in 2024 will reach nearly 400,000 tons, an increase of nearly 173,000 tons.

However, the main export market for tissue culture bananas is China, and many experts have warned of the risks of massively increasing acreage. Because if this market reduces imports, there will be a surplus of goods, prices will drop sharply, leading to heavy losses.
