People in Can Co village (Nam Ma commune) expand cassava growing area to bring high income.

The commune has focused on integrating State capital sources to support and invest in building basic infrastructure, supporting livelihoods, developing production according to value chains associated with the strengths of each region, each village and household. Currently, the locality has a road traffic system combined with waterways, irrigation, schools, and cultural houses that have been gradually invested in and completed. Thanks to that, it has created a push for people to dare to think, dare to do, and boldly change their thinking and old, traditional production methods to goods. Many households that were previously only familiar with small-scale, fragmented production now have more conditions to boldly invest in a system of commercial livestock and poultry farms; develop cage fish farming models on hydroelectric reservoirs; intensively cultivate and increase the number of crops of short-term crops on semi-flooded land or expand the area of medicinal herbs and temperate fruit trees on a concentrated scale.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dong - Vice Chairman of Nam Ma Commune People's Committee said: The commune faces many difficulties due to its large area, scattered population, and high poverty rate. However, in addition to the determination of the political system and the people's solidarity to overcome difficulties, the support policies of the central government and the province have created momentum for Nam Ma to have impressive changes. People have built and maintained over 100 fish cages on the lake; raised over 1,200 large livestock for sale; and the area for growing fruit trees and medicinal herbs has increased by more than 30% compared to before. These results not only help increase people's income, but also create a foundation for Nam Ma commune to move towards the goal of sustainable poverty reduction in the coming time.
Based on the potential and advantages of the locality, the commune focuses on orienting people to develop large-scale livestock farming and expand the area of commercial crops. From the State's livelihood support resources (plant and animal varieties; transfer of production techniques; pilot models, investment in barns, grass planting, production tools, etc.), poor, near-poor households, and large-scale livestock households boldly invest in building solid barns, applying semi-grazing methods, and planting more grass to ensure food sources for buffaloes, cows, and goats. Some villages also develop models of raising native black pigs, porcupines, and bamboo rats to shift economic development to increase income. In the field of cultivation, in addition to cassava, people expand the area of fruit trees (pineapple, orange, watermelon, etc.), initially bringing in a stable source of income and creating a premise for the commune to form a concentrated production area. Thereby, contributing to raising the average income per capita of the commune to more than 31 million VND/year; The poverty rate has decreased to about 43%.
Mr. Ly A Pao in Can Co village shared: “In the past, my family only grew rice, so our income was limited and our economy was difficult. With the support of the State for breeding animals, technical guidance from experts and preferential loans from banks, I invested in building barns, raising buffaloes for breeding, and growing cassava and pineapple. Currently, my family is raising 14 buffaloes and taking care of 1.5 hectares of pineapple and cassava. Life is less difficult, and my children can go to school regularly. In the village and commune, roads, electricity, schools and canals are now being invested in, so the appearance has changed and is more developed than before. We are very happy.”
From a land with many difficulties, Nam Ma commune has risen up thanks to the support policies of the central government and the province. Average income has increased, the rate of poor households has decreased over the years, many production models have been expanded in scale, new models have appeared... showing the right direction in the local sustainable agricultural development strategy. More importantly, the people have changed their production mindset, know how to apply new science and technology, unite and support each other to get rich on their homeland.
With the solid foundation that has been built, and the State's support in the next phase, we believe that Nam Ma commune will transform even more strongly, becoming a bright spot in the journey of sustainable poverty reduction and new rural construction of the province.
