Actress of “When Life Gives You a Tangerine”: “I really like the scenery and people of Da Nang”

At the opening ceremony of the Korean Cinema Spotlight program held at Le Do Theater, Da Nang city, actress Moon So Ri, who participated in the movie "When Life Gives You a Mandarin", shared her feelings when returning to Da Nang within the framework of the 2025 Da Nang Asian Film Festival.

Smiling brightly and friendly as she greeted the Da Nang audience in Vietnamese, actress Moon So Ri happily said that at DANAFF I, her role as a judge made her "stuck" with time, so she was not able to visit many places in this beautiful coastal city.

“DANAFF III will be an exciting and meaningful time for me. I will take the opportunity to visit the city and eat many delicious dishes. And I hope that the audience of the Film Festival will have the opportunity to watch interesting films,” the actress shared.

Talking about the Film Festival when returning after 2 years, the actress commented that this event has become familiar to her, and she is happy to see DANAFF growing in both scale and quality.

The actress was also surprised to see that the first screening of the Korean film attracted such a large audience, especially students.

Sharing about the city and people of Da Nang, Moon So Ri said that the people and audiences of Da Nang are very lovely, have joy and boundless love for cinema.


Moon So Ri also said that she really wants to go to Ba Na to explore another corner of Da Nang, and at the same time, the dishes in Da Nang are "fascinating" her. "The food here is very delicious, the taste is just right, not too salty, sweet or spicy and there are a lot of vegetables. I like the banh xeo here the most" - Moon So Ri said.

The Korean Cinema Spotlight program is a highlight of the festival's activities, with the participation of many famous Korean actors, filmmakers and producers, such as actors Moon So Ri, Park Sung Woong, producer Kim Young Min, director Jang Joon-hwan and especially the President of the Busan International Film Festival Park Kwang Su.

The program “Spotlight on Korean Cinema” introduces 11 typical films produced from the 60s of the last century to the present, along with 3 films by the “veteran” Korean filmmaker Im Kwon Taek. The program gives the audience a panoramic view of the long journey of Korean cinema from the difficult period to the brilliant development with many peaks.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City Ha Vy highly appreciated the program, sharing that Korean cinema has always been close and attractive to Vietnamese audiences for many decades, because of the appeal and achievements that Korean cinema has achieved in the world cinema. Korean films that deal with social issues, culture, people, family, etc. always bring a feeling of intimacy to Vietnamese viewers.

“Korean cinema is also a model of successful cultural industry development, a model that Vietnam is aiming for,” Mr. Ha Vy emphasized.

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion and Development of Cinema, Director of the 3rd Da Nang Asian Film Festival, affirmed that “Spotlight on Korean Cinema” is a major program at DANAFF this year, an important and in-depth event, with the participation of leaders of the Korean Embassy in Vietnam, the Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam, filmmakers, and prestigious stars of Korean cinema.


Expressing his joy when DANAFF III dedicated a program to Korean Cinema Spotlight, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Young Sam emphasized that the event is a bridge connecting 14 Korean films to Vietnamese audiences, to the Film Festival audience.

The opening film of the program is “The Gingko Bed” by director Kang Je Kyu, which was released in 1996.

“It is an honor for me to enjoy the work with director Kang Je Kyu in Da Nang. I hope that through the Korean Cinema Spotlight program, the two countries will understand each other better and become closer,” said Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Young Sam.

Director Kang Je Kyu attended the screening and had a chat with the audience at Le Do theater. He shared about the name of the film: “Ginkgo is a tree in Korea, with a lifespan of up to a thousand years. Through the image of the ginkgo tree, I hope the film will have vitality, long-lasting meaning, the characters meet and connect relationships with each other, including love and other social relationships...”.

The film tells the story of Soohyun, a stone carving artist and university lecturer, living a peaceful life with his lover, surgeon Sunyoung. Everything changes when he accidentally buys an antique bed made of ginkgo wood at a flea market, accidentally awakening a love story that transcends time. From an ordinary life, Soohyun is drawn into the mysterious vortex of past lives, unfulfilled desires and souls bound by fate.


The film won Best New Director and Best Actress at the 1996 Daejong Film Awards. In addition, the film won three more awards at the 1996 Blue Dragon Film Awards including Best New Director. The film also won Best Cinematography at the 1996 Baeksang Arts Awards.

“The film was released a long time ago and many of my memories have been forgotten, but I am very happy to be sitting here watching it again with the audience. In addition to my film, there are many works by famous filmmakers who are present at DANAFF this year, such as Park Kwang Su or Jang Joon Hwan, I hope everyone will welcome it” – director Kang Je Kyu emotionally shared.
