"I leave Kyiv tonight more excited about unity and results, about 2024... I am also more confident that as Ukraine strengthens its defenses, Mr. Putin will have some pleasant surprises on the battlefield and Ukraine will achieve some solid successes," US acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland emphasized during a meeting with journalists in Kyiv on January 31, according to AFP.
Ms Nuland also praised Ukraine for holding off Russian forces for nearly two years, saying this had “inflicted great damage on Mr Putin’s ground forces”.

Ms Nuland's visit to Kyiv comes as US aid to Ukraine faces obstacles, with US Republican lawmakers increasingly reluctant to continue supporting Ukraine.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that with $110 billion in critical aid from the US and the European Union facing obstacles in the approval process, the prospect of Ukraine's ability to sustain a long-term war is uncertain.

President Putin said on January 31 that Russian forces were advancing on the “outskirts” of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, a flashpoint that Russian forces have been trying to take control of for months.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said on January 30 that he thought the Russian offensive could stop in the coming months. "Their offensive is still ongoing, it will end around the beginning of spring," Budanov predicted on Ukrainian television, without providing details, according to AFP.
