Hop Thanh Commune (My Duc) is one of the localities that was heavily affected, when billions of dong of people's money were lost just a few hours after floodwaters flooded into villages and hamlets. Records of Dan Viet reporters on the night of September 12.
At around 11am on September 12, floodwaters suddenly rose into Phu Hien village (Hop Thanh, My Duc), leaving local residents unable to react.
Mr. Nguyen Van Viet was shocked when billions of dong were lying in the pond and "disappeared". Before that, the locality had issued a series of announcements about storm No. 3, along with the high water flow that could cause serious damage to the area. Realizing the seriousness, Mr. Viet and many local households used nets and built dikes to surround the pond, but up to now, everything has been lost.
Mr. Viet's pond, with an area of 50 acres and an investment capital of nearly 1.2 billion VND, was planned to be netted to pull the fish up and bring them to market in October. This year, his family would earn about 200 million VND from fish, but the money was nowhere to be seen and everything was lost in just a few hours.
Looking at the vast water that had swept away billions of his family's dong, Mr. Viet said bitterly: "We have to endure it, what else can we do? Now we can't even cry. We worked all year long waiting for one crop, but the natural disaster swept everything away. It took us a year, so it will take us 5 years to recover."
Having not had a full night's sleep for 4 days, Mr. Quan in Vai village (Hop Thanh commune) is worried that the flood will sweep away 20 tons of fish in his family's pond. Despite his worries and many prevention plans, everything is still swept away by the water.
At 9 p.m., Mr. Quan, his son, and his nephew were still using nets to scoop up the remaining small fish at the edge of the pond. According to him, the more fish they could save, the better. "Nearly 1 billion VND invested by the family just went down the drain," Mr. Quan said sadly.
Nguyen Thanh Hai could not eat or sleep all day because he felt sorry for his belongings. Even though it was late at night and his house was flooded, he still pulled the boat into the flooded area to go deeper into the flooded pond to spread more nets in the hope that there would be some fish left.
“My family had about 10 tons of fish, estimated to be worth about 600 million, but now it's all gone...", Mr. Hai choked up.
“Too sudden, no time to react, man proposes, God disposes…”, that’s what people here are saying about this year’s flood.
People strained to save property at night.
Rising floodwaters caused a complete power outage here, and some households selling frozen foods had to move out that night to avoid property damage.
The electric pole fell over.
The sky over Hop Thanh was pitch black after the power outage.
Flood water has turned the lives of people here upside down.
At the checkpoint, authorities are on duty 24/7 to prevent people from entering dangerous areas.
According to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue (PCTT&TKCN) of My Duc district, as of 7:00 p.m. on September 12, due to the impact of storms and floods, the water levels in rivers and lakes in the area rose. 1,549 households had their houses flooded. My Duc district has evacuated 986 households in low-lying areas and flooded houses to safe places.
