While many chicken farm owners and households are struggling to cope with the storm of plummeting chicken prices, households raising “royal” Ho chickens in Bac Ninh sell at high prices but still sell well. With a selling price of 100,000 VND/kg, people raising 1,000 Ho chickens can earn a profit of 30 million VND after deducting expenses.

Raising purebred Ho chickens for commercial purposes, delicious meat, sold at high prices

In order to develop and expand the number of purebred Ho chickens into typical products of Bac Ninh province, in 2024, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries proposed to build a model: "Using probiotic supplements to improve economic efficiency in developing sustainable Ho chicken farming and protecting the environment".

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province, the purebred Ho chicken breed in the model is a breed of chicken born from the 11th generation of purebred Ho chicken parents that has been selected, raised and preserved by DABACO Chicken Breeding Company Limited. The purebred Ho chicken (Ho chicken meat) has the typical appearance of the purebred Ho chicken breed. The chicken meat is firm, the meat quality is fragrant, delicious, sweet and the skin is crispy.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang in Mo Dao village, Mo Dao commune, Que Vo town, Bac Ninh province is one of three households selected to participate in the model, raising 1,900 purebred Ho chickens for sale. After nearly 5 months of raising, her family's flock of purebred Ho chickens for sale is ready for harvest, with an average weight of about 3kg per chicken.

According to Ms. Giang, when she was supported with purebred Ho chickens and probiotics for raising, she found that this breed of chickens was healthy and not infected with any diseases. From the time of brooding the chickens until selling them, her family did not use any antibiotics other than probiotics and vaccines to prevent epidemics.

Her family lets the chickens run around in a 1-hectare garden, allowing them to exercise and develop their natural habits, helping them stay healthy. Every day, along with industrial bran, she soaks corn and feeds it directly to the chickens. This is the type of food that the chickens love, competing to eat every time the owner scoops corn into the trough.

"Chicken prices are dropping sharply now, but this Ho chicken is still valuable. At the moment, supermarkets and restaurants are selling chickens at a maximum price of 100,000 VND/kg" - Ms. Giang said and informed that customers come to buy chickens to eat, they responded that the purebred Ho chicken raised by her family has fragrant meat, crispy skin, and is very delicious.

According to Mr. Dong, purebred Ho chickens have the best meat quality among all chickens, so many customers order dishes at the restaurant. Photo: Nguyen Huu Tho

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province, after a period of care and nurturing, the purebred Ho chickens raised in the 3 households participating in the model have all grown and developed well, with an average survival rate of 95.6%; the feed consumption coefficient is 3.35kg/kg of weight gain. "Comparing efficiency, every 1,000 Ho chickens raised in the model are expected to bring higher profits than Ho chickens raised normally by 22 million VND" - the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province commented.

In addition, the commercial purebred Ho chicken farming model using probiotic supplements also helps improve environmental pollution, create a clean farming environment, reduce harmful microorganisms, increase resistance, minimize disease and help the Ho chicken flock stay healthy...

Replicating the model to preserve and develop the rare Ho chicken breed

Ho chicken, also known as "royal chicken", originated from Lac Tho quarter, Ho ward, Thuan Thanh town, Bac Ninh province. This is a purebred Vietnamese chicken breed that is especially rare in Vietnam. Ho chicken also represents great luck, abundance, prosperity and peace, and is engraved by artisans into famous Dong Ho paintings at home and abroad.

Ho chickens are larger than other local chicken breeds, so they are classified as "meat chickens" in Vietnam. In 2009, Ho chickens were chosen as the symbol of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games held in Vietnam. Therefore, Ho chickens are also called Linh chickens or Linh Ke.

In Lac Tho neighborhood, many households still raise, breed, domesticate and develop Ho chickens using rustic, natural methods, mainly feeding them with rice mixed with green vegetables, so the meat is pink and delicious. It takes a long time to raise a Ho chicken, from 1-2 years before it can be sold. A mature Ho chicken weighs an average of 5-6kg and is often sold at a high price of 400-600 thousand VND/kg during the Lunar New Year.

Raising Ho chickens not only brings high economic value but also contributes to protecting the rare genetic resources of one of the unique native chicken breeds of Vietnam. However, besides valuable characteristics, Ho chickens also have some disadvantages: slow growth rate, low reproductive capacity, so breeding and expanding the flock size is difficult.

In particular, to meet the increasing food demand of society, in recent years, many domestic livestock facilities have imported foreign chicken breeds with high meat and egg productivity into production, causing local chicken breeds in general and Ho chicken breed in particular to be overwhelmed and crossbred, leading to the risk of degeneration.

Faced with the above situation, from 2020 up to now, Bac Ninh province has paid attention to directing and allocating funds for relevant departments, branches and local authorities to implement the conservation of purebred Ho chicken breeds at qualified breeding facilities.

In recent years, DABACO Chicken Breeding Company Limited has been assigned by the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province to carry out the task of preserving and developing the Ho chicken breed with the number of selected and raised chickens being 3,000/year. This is an important premise to help households and breeding facilities in Bac Ninh province buy quality chickens to multiply their flocks, expand their production scale to maintain the rare genetic resources that are being lost.

From the effectiveness of the model "Using probiotic supplements to improve economic efficiency in developing sustainable Ho chicken farming and protecting the environment", the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Bac Ninh province requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to pay more attention and create more favorable conditions in supporting the construction of a model to improve economic efficiency in developing Ho chicken farming in the whole province, while also protecting the farming environment.

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Aquatic Products of Bac Ninh province requested the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Aquatic Products Stations of districts, towns and cities to actively promote propaganda work for livestock households in the province to consider and choose to put into production. At the same time, it requested Dabaco Chicken Breeding Company Limited to create favorable conditions and provide appropriate incentives for livestock households who want to buy purebred Ho chickens for breeding in Bac Ninh province.

Policy to support the breeding, selection, domestication and development of Ho chicken breed

- For facilities for keeping, breeding, and pure breeding: Annual support for facilities that are qualified to keep, breed, and pure breed Ho chickens at the rate of 500,000 VND/breeding Ho chicken/year. The number of Ho chickens kept, bred, and purebred supported annually shall not exceed 3,000.
