Raising delicious mullet fish, Thai Binh farmer easily earns 300 million/year

Visiting Mr. Ngu's model during the harvest season, we felt the family's excitement. The fruit-laden orchards and nets full of fish are the result of more than 20 years of hard work by this simple farmer. Originally a seafarer, clam farmer and passionate about getting rich, in 2005, Mr. Ngu bid for land to invest in a livestock and crop farming model with a capital of 5 billion VND.

He shared: Thanks to the large land area, I dug 5 ponds of 2 hectares and many small ponds to raise traditional fish such as grass carp, bighead carp, and bighead carp... After the model gave good results, I signed contracts with companies to supply commercial fish to ensure stable output. In addition, I took advantage of the remaining 1 hectare of land to grow fruit trees.

Mr. Nguyen Doc Ngu, a farmer member of Dong Co commune (Tien Hai, Thai Binh ) earns more than 300 million VND/year from the model of raising fish and growing fruit trees.

To maintain the model's stable and effective development, Mr. Ngu actively participates in training courses, technical training on livestock farming, visits, studies and shares experiences with owners of effective fish breeding models to serve his fish farming work.

When traditional fish farming encountered many difficulties in terms of prices, Mr. Ngu quickly learned to combine raising new fish breeds for higher economic efficiency. He chose to raise pure freshwater mullet to continue with his passion for getting rich from agriculture.

According to Mr. Ngu, at first, he experimented with raising this fish breed on a 1-hectare pond. Freshwater mullet is very easy to raise, and can take advantage of available food sources in nature. When cared for according to the correct process, freshwater mullet will have an average weight of about 600 - 700 grams/fish. With high yield and selling price from 65,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, raising freshwater mullet is much more economically efficient than raising traditional fish.

“Although I only released the fish once, I harvested commercial fish for 2 years. My family mainly sells fish by order with an output of about 2 tons/year. Along with selling dozens of tons of fruit/year, my family earns more than 300 million VND from the agricultural production model,” Mr. Ngu shared.

Mr. Nguyen Doc Ngu's pure freshwater mullet is loved and supported by locals and customers.

Mr. Vu Thanh Liem, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dong Co Commune, commented: Member Nguyen Doc Ngu is one of the typical examples of good economic performance in Dong Co Commune. Currently, he is helping 3-4 seasonal workers work in the model with high income.

Besides, he is willing to share his experience and wholeheartedly help farmers in the commune with fish farming techniques so that everyone can have new ways of doing things. Mr. Ngu's success with the fish farming and fruit tree growing model has created more motivation and encouragement for the people here to develop the economy together on their own fields.

In the coming time, the Commune Farmers' Association will continue to advise the Party Committee and the government on solutions to support members in all aspects to replicate effective economic models, making the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, solidarity to help each other reduce poverty sustainably" spread more and more widely, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
