The recent historic floods in Thai Nguyen have damaged hundreds of rural water supply works. Many urban areas have had their water supply interrupted due to flooded factories and power outages. Authorities are working hard to repair the damaged works to soon stabilize people's lives.
In the central communes and wards of Thai Nguyen province, there are four water plants with a capacity of 600 m3 to 50,000 m3/day managed by Thai Nguyen Clean Water Joint Stock Company, supplying 65,000 customers, of which two water plants were flooded and had water supply interrupted due to natural disasters.
General Director Nguyen Xuan Hoc said: “Immediately after the water receded, we mobilized maximum manpower to clean the environment, wash and sanitize wells and tanks, and replace damaged equipment. The company coordinated with the electricity industry to supply electricity and put the Tuc Duyen and Quang Vinh water plants back into operation from October 11 to supply water for agencies, units, and people to use, clean furniture, and clean the environment.” In recent days, the Nui Coc Lake water plants and Tich Luong water plants have been operating at full capacity.
The Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation of Thai Nguyen province is managing dozens of standard domestic water supply works for rural people. Works that were flooded by floods such as Linh Son ward water supply works, Ha Chau commune water supply works... are being cleaned and their tanks are being washed to operate again. In addition, water supply works damaged before the flood are also being actively repaired to meet the needs of the people.
As a low-lying commune, groundwater is polluted with alum and heavy metals, but the sanitary water supply project of Ha Chau commune (now Diem Thuy commune) was severely damaged and has not been operating since 2016. Mr. Duong Van Ha, a local resident, said: "Since the sanitary water supply project was damaged, more than 700 households in the commune have had to use unsanitary well water or drilled wells. Water in many hamlets is contaminated with heavy metals and is turbid; some households have invested in water treatment systems, but the filters have to be changed continuously, so it is quite expensive and the water is still not safe to use."
At the end of 2024, the Center for Domestic Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation repaired, renovated, and upgraded the domestic water supply project to meet the standards of Ha Chau commune, with an investment of 3.9 billion VND from the provincial budget. Of which, a new well was drilled, and the old well was repaired and washed; new construction and repair of the filter tank system, storage tank; renovation and upgrading of the management house... Installation of a water treatment technology line including: Pressure generation system, heavy metal removal, turbidity treatment, and microbiological treatment. The entire project was completed and put into use from July 2025, providing domestic water meeting standards for 700 households in the area with a stable volume of 400 m3/day and night.
Director of the Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Nguyen Van Truong said: In the period of 2023-2025, Thai Nguyen province invested in a project to supply domestic water meeting standards with a total capital of 108 billion VND to build new and repair 22 works. By July 2025, all 22 works had been put into use, exploited, and supplied domestic water meeting standards for 10,000 households, raising the rate of 97.5% of the rural population in the old Thai Nguyen province to use water of hygienic standards or higher. After merging Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces, up to now, the whole province has 60% of the rural population using water of hygienic standards or higher.
Thai Nguyen province has set a target of having 80% of the rural population, equivalent to more than 57,000 households, supplied with standard domestic water by 2030. To achieve this goal, recently, the Center for Domestic Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation coordinated with communes to review existing works to propose plans to repair, upgrade, increase capacity, and expand water supply area. In 37 northern communes and wards (formerly Bac Kan province), there are 745 rural domestic water supply works, of which 167 are damaged and inactive and need repair.
Based on the review and assessment of the practice of rural water supply, the Provincial Center for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation advised the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment to propose to the Party Committee and the Government the need for investment capital from now to 2030 of about 1,800 billion VND from the state budget, other legal capital sources and socialized capital to build new, repair and upgrade rural water supply works. Up to now, the province is building Phu Binh Water Plant with a total investment capital of 300 billion VND to supply water meeting standards to tens of thousands of households.
