With a coastline of over 130 km and the Ly Son island area, Quang Ngai province has many advantages for developing saltwater and brackishwater aquaculture. Taking advantage of thousands of hectares of water surface from ponds, lagoons, rivers, reservoirs, irrigation dams, and hydroelectric power plants has opened up opportunities for developing freshwater aquaculture. However, the province's aquaculture industry faces many challenges when directly affected by extreme weather, natural disasters, storms and floods. Investment in aquaculture infrastructure is still limited. Industry planning is still overlapping, not creating investment attraction for businesses.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment has determined that it is necessary to continue expanding and cultivating traditional aquatic species and freshwater fish species with high economic value, aiming for export in the coming time. Pay more attention to developing marine aquaculture into a commodity production sector. Encourage models of applying advanced, environmentally friendly science and technology to increase value and sustainable development. Strengthen joint ventures and linkages along the chain from seed production, farming to exploitation, purchasing and processing.
The conference discussed the development of marine aquaculture in Ly Son special zone. The effectiveness of the co-culture model of snails and fish. The development of sturgeon and coldwater fish farming in the province. Proposed more solutions for sustainable development of aquaculture in Quang Ngai province.
The total aquaculture area in Quang Ngai province is nearly 2,400 hectares. The estimated output is over 10,100 tons.
