China said an investigation has found US chipmaker Nvidia violated its anti-monopoly rules and announced it would launch an additional probe, shortly after trade talks between the two countries entered a second day.

According to a statement from China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), a preliminary investigation found that Nvidia had violated the country's Anti-Monopoly Law. Therefore, SAMR has decided to conduct a further investigation in accordance with the law. The statement did not provide further details about Nvidia's alleged violations or the subsequent investigation.

Last month, California-based AI chip leader Nvidia reported earnings that expressed concerns about its business in China, which is under increased scrutiny from the US government due to rising trade and geopolitical tensions.

About an hour before the SAMR announcement, officials from the two countries began a second consecutive day of trade talks in Madrid, Spain, aimed at narrowing differences on a series of issues that have adversely affected bilateral relations.

The agenda for the talks includes national security issues and the status of ByteDance Ltd.’s short -video platform TikTok, which faces a deadline this week to reach a deal to continue operating in the United States.

Officials from both countries are also expected to prepare for a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as early as October, when the two leaders are expected to attend a summit in South Korea.

China is competing fiercely with the US to gain leadership in the important field of semiconductors./.
