Converting and diversifying organic farming methods as well as using high-quality plant varieties in production to improve economic efficiency is a focused and key development direction implemented by the Management Board of Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone.

In particular, the model of growing asparagus according to VietGAP standards and organically in the High-tech Agricultural Zone is affirming that this is a direction with great prospects in the future.

With the aim of building a high-tech vegetable production model in the organic direction at the Hau Giang High-tech Agricultural Zone, in order to transform the crop structure, increase productivity, value, environmental sustainability, and increase income for farmers through coordinating production and product consumption with enterprises in the Hau Giang High-tech Agricultural Zone.

Since August 2022, this unit has built a high-tech organic vegetable production model with a scale of 2,000m2, of which 1,000m2 is for growing curly lettuce and 1,000m2 is for asparagus. In order for people to grasp the knowledge and be able to produce according to the process, the Management Board of the Agricultural Zone of the High-tech Agricultural Zone organized a training course on the asparagus growing process with 40 people participating.

Accordingly, households are trained, exchanged information, equipped with both theoretical and practical knowledge on applying high technology to asparagus growing techniques according to VietGAP standards and organically. In addition, the model is a place for people to visit, learn and exchange experiences.

Dr. Do Thi Xuan, Head of the project on Building a high-tech vegetable production model in the direction of organic farming at Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone, shared: Asparagus is a clean vegetable product, so farmers must strictly follow technical processes in planting and caring for it.

Accordingly, crops must be grown in sunny and airy places, with each row having a suitable distance.

The best growing conditions are at 25-30ºC, suitable for planting on light soil with high humus content. When caring for the plant, do not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers and ensure clean irrigation water to keep moisture, helping the plant grow and develop well.

In particular, growing asparagus requires careful care when the plant is young, but when the plant grows, care will be easier.

“The advantage of asparagus is that it has a life cycle of more than 15 years. It can be planted once but harvested for many years and the yield will increase gradually over the years. Therefore, if well cared for, the plant can be harvested regularly for 7-8 years and each year the asparagus can be harvested about 3-4 times, each time lasting 2-3 months. This helps to improve the economic efficiency of growers,” said Dr. Do Thi Xuan.

Mr. Ho Ngoc Binh, Director of Long Tri A Safe Vegetable Cooperative, Long My Town (Hau Giang Province) confided: "Although it is a new model, in my opinion this asparagus model is very promising because it not only helps farmers get rich but also opens up a new direction for economic development for people, creating clean and safe agricultural products for consumers.

After being instructed on the process of growing and producing asparagus according to VietGAP standards and organically, my family plans to develop this crop first at the farm level, then expand it to the members of the cooperative.

“Although quite new to farmers in Hau Giang, the model is considered very potential, bringing high economic efficiency, long-term and environmentally friendly, minimizing the use of pesticides.

This is an important premise for the locality to develop a new model, bringing economic efficiency, helping farmers increase income and improve their lives. In the coming time, we will continue to research to be able to deploy this model in real-life planting at households", Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thoai, Director of the Management Board of Hau Giang High-Tech Agricultural Zone, informed.
