"If the US attacks our targets, it will mean starting a new world war and a foreign minister, even of a country like Poland, should understand that," Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned on social network X on May 26.
The warning came just a day after Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in an interview that the US had said that if Moscow used nuclear weapons, Washington would respond by using conventional weapons against Russian forces in Ukraine.
“The US side has warned the Russian side that if they (Russia) use a nuclear bomb, even if it doesn't kill anyone, Washington will attack all Russian targets in Ukraine with conventional weapons, the US will destroy all of them,” Secretary of State Sikorski told the Guardian .
In addition, Mr. Sikorski added that both China and India appear to have warned Russia not to use nuclear weapons.
The Polish diplomat said he supported ending bans that prevent Ukraine from using Western weapons to attack targets in Russia, similar to a recent call by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Mr Medvedev said the Polish diplomat was trying to "scare" Russia. However, unlike Poland, the US has so far refrained from making any such threats publicly "because they are more cautious", he said.
Mr Medvedev also reiterated comments by Polish President Andrzej Duda last month that Poland would be ready to accept US nuclear weapons if such an opportunity arose under NATO's sharing mechanism.
The former Russian President warned that in the event of a nuclear conflict, "Poland certainly cannot stand aside, but will certainly receive its share of radioactive ash", so does the Polish leadership want that?
In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country was on full combat alert and was fully prepared for nuclear war. However, Putin said at the time that Russia had never faced the need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
Moscow also believes that Russia is confronting not only Ukraine but also the West. Moscow considers the West to have become a de facto belligerent party by continuing to supply weapons to Ukraine.
Russia even accused the West of transferring long-range weapons to Kiev to launch attacks on Russian territory.
The US and its allies insist they are forcing Ukraine to commit to using Western weapons only inside its own territory. However, Britain recently became the first NATO member to say it does not object to Ukraine using weapons to target Russian territory.
Yehor Cherniev, a Ukrainian lawmaker, said US officials have also begun discussing easing restrictions for Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the House Foreign Affairs Committee earlier this week that Washington was ready to discuss with Kiev the possibility of using US weapons to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
