On his Truth Social platform, President Trump stressed: "Why doesn't Harvard say that almost 31% of their students come from foreign lands, and those countries, some of which are totally unfriendly to the United States, pay nothing to educate their students, nor do they ever intend to do so... We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request because we give Harvard billions of dollars, and Harvard is not fully cooperative."

Previously, on May 22, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revoked Harvard's ability to enroll foreign citizens, making the future of thousands of students and Harvard's lucrative source of income uncertain.

Losing foreign nationals — more than a quarter of the school’s students — could be devastating for Harvard, which charges tens of thousands of dollars in tuition each year.

Harvard is the richest university in the United States with an endowment worth $53.2 billion by 2024.

Tensions between the two sides have been simmering since late March when the US Department of Education warned it would re-evaluate its $8.7 billion grant to Harvard.

The Trump administration also asked Harvard to rescind its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs, arguing that these programs award opportunities based on race and gender rather than actual ability.

Harvard University said it was willing to cooperate with the administration, but said such requests were an overreach by the federal government aimed at "controlling the Harvard community" and "threatening the university's values as a private institution focused solely on the pursuit, creation, and dissemination of knowledge."
