Speaking to the press on January 27, US President Donald Trump revealed that the US Microsoft Corporation is negotiating to acquire TikTok, according to Reuters and Bloomberg.
“I confirm,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when asked if Microsoft was in talks to buy TikTok. “There’s a lot of interest in TikTok,” he added. “There’s tremendous interest in TikTok.”
However, Microsoft Corporation declined to comment on this information. TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance did not immediately respond when asked to comment on the White House owner's statement.
If Trump is correct, the talks would mark the second time Microsoft has entered into an effort to acquire TikTok, after similar talks collapsed in 2020.
TikTok - a short -video sharing app with about 170 million users in the US - was forced to shut down shortly before a law requiring ByteDance to sell the app for national security reasons or face a ban, took effect on January 19.
Immediately after taking office as president on January 20, Mr. Trump signed an executive order to delay the implementation of the law for 75 days.
Last week, Donald Trump said he was in talks with several people about buying TikTok and would likely make a decision on the app's future within 30 days.
Mr Trump has previously said he would be willing to let US billionaire Elon Musk buy TikTok if the world’s richest man wanted to do so. However, billionaire Musk has not yet commented publicly on Mr Trump’s offer.
More recently, on January 26, US startup Perplexity AI proposed a merger with TikTok.
