“We have to decide our future between 9pm and 11pm on November 5,” Republican candidate Donald Trump said. This is not the first time Mr Trump has requested an early announcement of the US presidential election results. In 2020, Mr Trump declared victory early in the morning on the first day of the election, prompting his supporters to demand that officials “stop the counting”.
However, it is difficult to announce the results of the US presidential election on the night of November 5, because polling stations will not close until 11:00 p.m. Eastern time (04:00 GMT) and many Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have applied laws to delay the vote count.

Additionally, the US’s decentralized voting system requires tens of millions of votes to be counted across 10,000 separate jurisdictions. Ultimately, the biggest factor in the delay may be the election’s close margin of votes.
Three towns in New Hampshire state including Dixville Notch, Hart's Location and Millsfield are the first places to open for people to vote from 0:00 on November 5 (12 Hanoi time).
Most polling places across the United States will open between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. on November 5, depending on the time zones across the country. Polling stations will close between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, Eastern time.
Results are expected to begin to be announced when polling stations begin to close at around 6:00 p.m. Eastern time (6:00 a.m. on November 6, Hanoi time).
The tradition of holding the US presidential election on the first Tuesday of November dates back to 1845. This decision was made by Congress when the US was still a predominantly agricultural society. By scheduling the election after the fall harvest, farmers could more easily travel to polling places, which were often far from their homes. This timing and tradition have remained to this day.
