The Ukrainian leader, wearing his signature olive green hoodie, landed at Hiroshima airport from a French government plane and was greeted on the tarmac with a red carpet and a group of officials.

The appearance of the Ukrainian President was considered a "surprise", as he had previously planned to attend only online via video link.

The move has drawn attention as the G7 meeting grapples with a range of thorny topics, including how to address concerns about China's growing economic and military power.

However, the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains one of the top issues on the agenda at this weekend's G7 Summit.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said the Ukrainian president will attend a meeting with G7 leaders on May 21. At the same time, Mr. Zelensky will also attend a session on "peace and stability" attended by non-G7 countries.
