Tech company OpenAI is releasing an artificial intelligence (AI) video creation app called Sora that allows users to create and share videos from copyrighted content on social media-like news feeds.

Copyright holders, such as movie studios and TV stations, will have to actively opt out if they don't want their content to appear in the app, according to OpenAI representatives.

The policy is seen as a continuation of the approach OpenAI has taken with AI-generated images, but is expected to spark fierce debate in the film and media industries, especially in Hollywood.

OpenAI has been in talks with several copyright holders recently to discuss this policy, and Disney was one of the first to refuse to allow its content to be used on the platform, according to people familiar with the matter.

Earlier this year, OpenAI also lobbied the Trump administration to recognize the use of copyrighted content to train AI models as "fair use" under US copyright law.

The company claims that using the “fair use” doctrine is not just a matter of national competitiveness but also a matter of national security. Without this step, OpenAI says, American AI companies could lose their edge to Chinese competitors.

On privacy, OpenAI said it has implemented a number of measures to prevent the creation of videos imitating celebrities or other users without permission.

One of those protection tools is a “liveness” test – the app will ask users to move their heads in a certain direction and read a random number, to confirm their identity before they can upload an AI video that uses their image.

Users will also be able to preview drafts of videos containing personal images before allowing sharing.

Videos created with the Sora app can be up to 10 seconds long. One notable feature is Cameo, which allows users to create realistic AI versions of themselves to appear in AI-generated scenes.

Tech companies are competing for time and changing consumer behavior, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak.

He believes that the Sora application can become a direct competitor to current social networking and digital content platforms such as Meta, Google, TikTok..../.
