Padel is a typical sport , a variation between tennis and squash, that has appeared and developed in Vietnam.
Padel has been
around for more than 50 years, especially popular in Spain and some Latin American countries, but has now spread around the world. In particular, Cristiano Ronaldo once caused a fever playing padel in Singapore in June 2023.
Padel courts are smaller than traditional tennis courts and are often surrounded by glass walls. Padel courts typically measure 10m x 20m, with 3m high walls surrounding three sides of the court and a net in the middle. The court has no boundaries, only divisions to distinguish the serving.
Players use rackets that are smaller and lighter than tennis rackets, with a netted surface, which helps to produce good performance when playing against walls. Padel balls are also heavier than regular tennis balls. The court surface is a mixture of sand and plastic, so the ball bounces less, making it easier for players to hit the ball.
Padel is played in doubles format, meaning each team consists of two players. The rules are similar to tennis with some variations. A unique feature is that in padel, the serve must hit the ground before hitting the opponent's court. The ball is bounced off a flat wall and can be played by both teams before it hits the court. The scoring is similar to tennis, with three sets of six games each.
Padel is often played in a style that combines tennis and squash, using a closed wall to execute complex and tactical shots.
Vietpadel coach Le Pham Thanh Phong shared: "Padel is a popular and accessible sport, especially for beginners, but also requires technique and tactics to play at a high level."
Former Vietnamese tennis singles and doubles champion Tran Thi Kim Loi has switched to playing padel. She said that this new sport is very interesting and suitable for all ages. "When I experienced this sport, I found it very interesting. The skill of handling the ball when it bounces off a glass wall requires a lot of practice to master," she said.

Actor Kim Ly, husband of singer Ho Ngoc Ha, also attended the APPT tournament with Lu Quoc Linh, who participated in the French Open junior tennis tournament. "The padel movement is developing quite strongly, attracting many players. The fact that Ho Chi Minh City was chosen to host an international tour in 2024 is an important milestone to help padel develop further," said Lu Quoc Linh - the first person to create the padel movement in Vietnam.
APPT Ho Chi Minh Open 2024 is a tournament in the Open system of the Asia Pacific Padel Tour (a series of tournaments taking place in countries in the Asia-
Pacific region with three systems: Open, Grand Slam and Master). The champion receives 1,000 points on the APPT ranking and 2,000 USD in prize money. The runner-up team will receive 600 points and 1,000 USD.
