Speaking to reporters upon arriving in El Salvador after a visit to Panama, Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared: “It was a very meaningful and respectful visit. It was a visit that I think will have the potential to do some good things to help alleviate our concerns… I think this is a sensitive issue in Panama and we don’t want to have an adversarial or negative relationship with Panama.”
In addition, Secretary of State Marco Rubio also cited Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino's statement that the country will not continue to participate in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The US secretary of state called the move a "big step forward", noting that Panama was the first country in Latin America to withdraw from the BRI.
In addition, the US Secretary of State also commented that Panama is a "great partner" in the effort to stop migration, one of President Donald Trump's top priorities.
