Within a week, Viet Duc Hospital received four teenagers with serious injuries caused by homemade fireworks exploding, mainly with crushed hands.
On January 14, a representative of the Department of Upper Limb Surgery and Sports Medicine, Viet Duc Hospital, said that the four patients were all of school age, with severe injuries to their hands that would last a lifetime.
Typically, a 14-year-old boy in Bac Giang province had a firecracker explode while he was holding it, resulting in a crushed hand. Doctors performed emergency surgery to create a truncated tip of the third and fifth metacarpal bones, remove the crushed muscle mass, and fix the first metacarpal bone of the right hand.
Or a child in Quang Ninh was transferred in a complex state of crushed right palm, broken fingers, and abdominal wall injuries, due to homemade firecrackers. Doctors had to repair the stump of the V finger, reposition and suture the ligament of the I metacarpal joint.

Dr. Luu Danh Huy, Department of Upper Limb Surgery and Sports Medicine, said that most victims of homemade fireworks require emergency surgery, the wounds are dirty, and there is a high risk of infection. In most cases of hand injuries, the rate of amputation of fingers is very high, in addition to other injuries such as soft tissue, skin, tendons, fingers, and nerves.
"In young people, damage to the dominant hand affects daily activities and work, and leaves lifelong consequences," said Dr. Huy.
Doctors recommend that people strictly comply with legal regulations on the management and use of fireworks, and not arbitrarily manufacture explosives or fireworks, threatening the lives of themselves and those around them.
