France appreciates Vietnam's active role in the international arena

The French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs affirmed that France attaches importance to its relations with Vietnam - a country that plays an important role in ASEAN and in France's Indo-Pacific strategy.

On June 8, on the occasion of attending the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Oceans (UNOC 3) in Nice (France), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean Noel Barrot.

At the meeting, both sides were pleased with the good results of the state visit to Vietnam at the end of May by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the positive developments in the Vietnam-France relationship in recent times, especially since the two countries upgraded their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during General Secretary To Lam's visit to France (October 2024); highly appreciated France's careful preparation for UNOC 3 and affirmed Vietnam's support for French initiatives to respond to current non-traditional security challenges, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world .

The French Foreign Minister thanked Vietnam for its support and active participation in the Conference, and highly appreciated Vietnam's role as an active and responsible member in the international arena.

Minister Jean Noel Barrot affirmed that France attaches importance to its relations with Vietnam - a country that plays an important role in ASEAN and in France's Indo-Pacific strategy; and wishes to further promote bilateral cooperation to bring the Vietnam-France Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into deeper and more practical depth.

The two sides agreed to closely coordinate to promote the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level; effectively implement signed cooperation documents, thereby promoting cooperation in areas where France has strengths and Vietnam has needs such as national defense and security, including cyber security, aerospace, transportation, strategic infrastructure, energy, etc.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son has sent an invitation to French senior leaders to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi (October 2025).

Minister Jean Noel Barrot affirmed that he will promote the early approval of the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), thereby creating favorable conditions for businesses of the two countries as well as European businesses operating in each side; agreed with Vietnam to strengthen cooperation in the field of science and technology, a new pillar in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with much potential and room for cooperation.

On this occasion, the two sides also discussed international and regional situations of mutual concern, highlighting the essential role of multilateralism, in which the United Nations holds a central position.

Regarding issues related to seas and oceans, the two sides emphasized that the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) is the comprehensive legal framework for all activities and cooperation at sea and in the ocean; reaffirmed the commitment to maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region, resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law and supporting all efforts to soon reach an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in accordance with international law, especially UNCLOS 1982.

Also at the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son invited Minister Jean Noel Barrot to visit Vietnam soon. French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean Noel Barrot happily accepted the invitation./.
