Right after Tet, farmers in Cai Nuoc district started their daily work, hoping that the new year will continue to reap success in aquaculture with the super-intensive shrimp farming (STC) model using biological products. From there, they will create quality shrimp products and achieve ASC certification to increase value, improve economic efficiency, and contribute to the sustainable development of STC shrimp farming in 2025 and the following years.
Cai Nuoc district has a total aquaculture area of over 30,000 hectares, of which 2,000 hectares are being maintained for intensive and STC shrimp farming. The average shrimp productivity reaches nearly 50 tons/ha/crop, many times higher than that of improved extensive shrimp farming and 2-stage improved extensive shrimp farming, becoming a key economic model of the locality.
For the sustainable development of STC shrimp, Mr. Bui Chi Thuong, Tan Hoa hamlet, Thanh Phu commune, as well as shrimp farming households in the district have been changing their thinking and working methods, boldly applying biological products in STC shrimp farming to create quality shrimp products, sold at high prices to increase value, improve economic efficiency for families and protect the environment in STC shrimp farming.
Accordingly, with an area of over 6,000 m2 , Mr. Thuong only arranged 2 shrimp ponds with an area of 3,000 m2 , the rest was used to build a pond, a settling pond and a wastewater treatment system. In the process of raising STC shrimp, he absolutely did not use chemicals, but instead used biological products that he researched, developed and applied himself with positive results. In 2024 alone, the family harvested over 40 tons of STC shrimp and is currently raising a new crop that is 20 days old and is growing well. In 2025, the family's main goal is to continue to effectively apply biological products in STC shrimp farming, save costs, increase productivity and shrimp output on the same area, and create quality shrimp products for sale at high prices.
Mr. Bui Chi Thuong's farmed shrimp is growing well. Mr. Thuong hopes that in the new year, applying biological products will increase the productivity and output of farmed shrimp.
For many years, Tan Hung High-Yield Shrimp Cooperative has maintained and kept STC shrimp products certified by BAP Group. This is an aquaculture standard developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, with criteria that farmed shrimp when harvested must ensure food safety, easy traceability and protect the ecological environment, and meet the conditions to supply businesses with farmed shrimp products for export abroad.
Mr. Huynh Xuan Dien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cooperative, shared: “The BAP Group shrimp certification only reaches a few markets, the enterprises purchasing STC shrimp from the cooperative for processing and export only support members with 2,000 VND/kg of raw shrimp. Meanwhile, shrimp with ASC certification can be exported to more markets, and enterprises purchasing raw shrimp support shrimp farmers with up to 4,000 VND/kg. In 2025, the Board of Directors of the Cooperative will discuss with aquatic product purchasing enterprises to support upgrading the shrimp certification from BAP Group to ASC certification so that members can benefit more, improve economic efficiency and competitiveness in the market.”
Tan Hung Commune High-Yield Shrimp Farming Cooperative renovates ponds to prepare for new shrimp farming season.
It is easy to see that in the new year 2025, STC shrimp farmers in Cai Nuoc district have renewed their thinking and awareness in aquaculture, aiming to produce quality farmed shrimp products, protect the environment and achieve the goal of achieving ASC certification.
Mr. Tran Hoang Dao, Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "The locality will continue to replicate the STC shrimp farming model in a biological direction, combining the application of non-wastewater recirculation technology, to protect the STC shrimp farming environment and create quality shrimp products to meet export requirements, in order to increase value, improve economic efficiency, and contribute to the sustainable development of STC shrimp farming"./.
