With the advantage of seaport infrastructure, the Vietnamese maritime industry is continuing to promote investment and exploitation of the seaport system according to "green" and sustainable criteria, synchronously connecting with the region and the world, increasing the value of import and export goods.

Ports in Vietnam are quickly finding "green" solutions to realize the goal of developing a marine economy.

The International Maritime Organization has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 and Vietnam is no exception. Therefore, converting to a green port model is a mandatory requirement and a prerequisite for our country's maritime industry to compete and integrate with the world.

The green port development project is divided into phases, but the most important phase is the 2023-2025 period, which will adjust regulations related to the management, investment and construction of seaports in accordance with the criteria of "green" ports. Therefore, it is required that in 2025, efforts must be made to complete the criteria for green ports. In parallel with the process of investing in and exploiting the seaport system, an accompanying requirement is that port enterprises need to promote digital transformation activities, applying technology to increase connectivity in transportation activities - an important part of promoting the development of the marine economy.

“In terms of infrastructure breakthroughs, the company continues to vigorously implement deep-water port projects. In particular, the largest resources are focused on developing the Can Gio international transit port. Early implementation of these will raise maritime competitiveness to the international and regional level. The company continues to complete berths 3 and 4 of Lach Huyen port, deep-water ports through Lien Chieu port, Da Nang”, Mr. Nguyen Canh Tinh, General Director of Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) analyzed.

Statistics from the Maritime Administration show that the growth of cargo at Vietnam's seaports is at double digits each year, which is considered a good growth rate. Investment in ports and maritime is pouring into Vietnam, creating opportunities to become a major transit hub. In the general development trend, Vietnam must choose a development direction to ensure green, clean and sustainable in line with global trends.

Mr. Pham Hoai Chung, Chairman of the Board of Members, Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC), said that this is a highly sustainable competitive trend and will promote the development of businesses in the maritime sector. “The Prime Minister has proposed forms of seaport development in the direction of green port development. At that time, Vietnam will attract investors to invest in a synchronous and sustainable seaport system. When Vietnam has a developed seaport system, logistics costs will be reduced, thereby increasing the competitiveness of businesses in the international arena,” Mr. Chung commented.

Currently, about 70% of newly built cargo ships in the world have switched to using green fuel. This requires ports in Vietnam to quickly find "green" solutions to realize the goal of developing the marine economy. In fact, in 2025, Da Nang port aims to continue to focus resources on expanding and developing the seaport system, focusing on combining science and technology, continuing to innovate and improve to continuously improve infrastructure, improve the quality of seaport exploitation and logistics services.

“Da Nang Port is determined to continue digitalization to increase capacity, reduce costs, and create the most optimal conditions for customers. Currently, Da Nang Port has applied a semi-automated process, customers can complete procedures at home, creating favorable conditions for businesses to operate,” said Mr. Tran Le Tuan, General Director of Da Nang Port.

Investing in the construction and development of a green port system will open up great opportunities for cooperation.

When seaports are invested in and built to accommodate large tonnage ships entering and leaving, their competitiveness will increase greatly. For example, in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, opening a gateway connecting two ports between Tan Cang Cai Mep – Thi Vai (TCTT) and Cai Mep International Port (CMIT) will increase port exploitation capacity.

The cooperation in opening a connection gateway and exploiting a common wharf between these two ports is considered a pioneering alliance solution, cooperating to effectively exploit our country's seaport system. This cooperation aims to take advantage of the synchronous infrastructure, thereby forming a connected port with a longer total wharf length, improving the exploitation capacity and increasing the ship reception capacity of both sides.

“Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port is a deep-water port cluster, a gateway port of the Southern key economic region, so the growth rate has been very high in recent times. Not having to invest in additional wharfs, but still creating a capacity of 400,000 TEU/year is a breakthrough and a victory for the ports,” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, General Director of Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) made a comparison calculation.

Discussing the trend of developing green ports towards sustainable development in the context of current global competition, Dr. Hoang Hiep, Deputy General Director of Port Design and Marine Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company (Portcoast) pointed out that for green ports, digital transformation technology plays an extremely important role. Therefore, to increase competitiveness, cooperation between port enterprises, including Portcoast, needs to continue to be promoted, on the basis of synchronous deployment of many supporting applications in the digital transformation process.

The green port model is a mandatory requirement and a prerequisite for the maritime industry to compete and integrate with the world.

Experts and enterprises in the port sector believe that the investment in building and developing a green port system will open up great opportunities for cooperation, ports can receive super container ships, creating a new momentum and driving force for dynamic and effective development for ports. This will significantly increase revenue and profit for port operators, contributing to consolidating the position of ports in the region, increasing the competitiveness of enterprises in Vietnam's logistics service chain in the context of global integration.
