As the district with the largest natural area and border in the province, before 2020, the connection between the highland border communes of Muong Te district took a lot of time. Communes such as Ta Tong - Mu Ca; Pa U - Ta Ba; Pa U - Pa Ve Su... border administrative boundaries, the road from the center of one commune to another must go around many localities, the distance can be up to hundreds of kilometers. In particular, the villages located close to the border do not have car roads to the village. Underdeveloped transportation is one of the main reasons why poverty "clings" to the people here.
The district has implemented the Ta Ba - Pa U inter-regional traffic project with a total investment of 164 billion VND and completed and put into operation in 2021. The project has shortened the travel distance between the centers of the two communes from over 80km to nearly 30km, this traffic route promotes the regional economy of the two border communes. The connected traffic has attracted investors to implement projects such as: hydropower, afforestation, medicinal herbs, especially Lai Chau ginseng... helping people have jobs, develop the economy, and trade with other localities.
Comrade Po Khu Xa - Chairman of Ta Ba Commune People's Committee shared: Previously, there was only one road into the commune, which was prone to landslides during the rainy season and was easily isolated. Since the inter-regional road between Ta Ba - Pa U has been built, it has helped people travel conveniently and the commune has attracted investors. In the coming time, the commune hopes that the State will continue to invest in upgrading and expanding the road from the center of Ta Ba commune to La Pe - Le Giang - La Si villages (Ta Ba commune) with Ka Lang - Lo Ma villages to the center of Ka Lang commune. If this project is implemented, it will create regional links between villages in border communes and create a development axis for the border area adjacent to the U Ma Tu Khoong sub-border gate.

In response to the need for regional connectivity in Muong Te district, in March 2025, the Provincial People's Committee approved the Project to renovate and repair a number of traffic routes in the communes of Pa Ve Su and Pa U (Muong Te district). The project has a total investment of 80 billion VND with dual goals, not only improving the traffic network to Sin Chai A, B, C villages (Pa Ve Su commune) with Ha Xi village (Pa U commune); connecting the center of Pa U commune with Pa Ve Su commune, creating easy travel conditions for people in the area, promoting the development of agricultural production in the region, contributing to the socio-economic development of localities but also being a route serving the work of border management, patrolling and protection, helping border guards and other forces perform well their border protection tasks in the area.
Comrade Ly My Ly - Secretary of the Party Committee of Pa Ve Su commune said: “The project has been the desire of the commune for many years. When the project is completed, traffic to Sin Chai A, B, C villages will be improved, shortening the distance and making it possible to travel by car. Thereby, creating favorable conditions for tourists to conquer Pu Si Lung mountain - the second highest mountain in Vietnam, with great potential for tourism development and Lai Chau ginseng cultivation. This will be an advantage to attract investment and promote the development of medicinal herbs and large-scale livestock farming. Thus, the lives of La Hu ethnic people in the villages will certainly be improved. The route also helps the armed forces and people in the commune to perform well the task of patrolling and protecting border sovereignty ”.
Developing transport infrastructure, in the period of 2020-2025, Muong Te district will implement 57 projects, investing in the construction of over 325km of roads and auxiliary items, with a total cost of over 594 billion VND. Including inter-regional transport projects such as: Ta Ba - Pa U; Ta Tong - Mu Ca; Nam Lan - Moc 18... However, in reality, Muong Te district is in dire need of attention in terms of resources to continue investing in the development of transport projects, especially inter-regional transport routes.
Talking to us, Mr. Dao Van Khanh - Chairman of Muong Te District People's Committee said: In the period of 2026-2030, the district proposed that the Provincial People's Committee and central ministries and branches continue to invest in about 112 projects in the transport sector, with a total investment of about 1,025 billion VND. In the coming time, although there is no longer a district-level government, the merged communes will have reduced administrative units, but to ensure regional connectivity after the merger of communes, the transport infrastructure must still be completed. Therefore, regional transport connectivity projects in Muong Te district still need to be implemented to shorten the travel distance of people as well as the difference between regions, promote socio-economic development, and ensure national defense and security.
