Developing an open, secure, inclusive and technology-responsive internet

In the context of constantly developing new technologies, the ICANN APAC DNS Forum 2025, held from May 7-9 in Hanoi, will discuss the goal of developing an inclusive internet, by focusing on the diversity of languages ​​and scripts around the world.

Providing diversity in the character system on the Domain Name System (DNS) is considered an essential factor in making the Internet more accessible to hundreds of millions of users around the world.

ICANN, full name is Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is an international domain name management organization, established in California on September 30, 1998, performing the function of managing basic parameters of the internet (IP addresses, domain names, protocol parameters in internet standards, DNS root - the most important technical infrastructure system for the operation of the entire internet).

ICANN Asia-Pacific Domain Name and Domain Name Server Forum (APAC DNS Forum) is a specialized forum on domain name management, management, and development of the domain name server system (DNS) hosted by ICANN from 2022.

The event connects experts in the field of the Asia-Pacific region to discuss strategies for developing the DNS system, managing domain names in line with the development of the internet, and applying new internet resource technology in the region. VNNIC was invited by ICANN to host the APAC DNS Forum 2025.

Vietnam has been focusing on the goal of popularizing the “.vn” domain name for small and medium enterprises, business households, individuals, especially young students. On May 21, 2024, Decision No. 826/QD-BTTTT was issued with special preferential policies and solutions for the “id.vn” and “biz.vn” domain names and many accompanying digital services, with the determination to achieve the goal of 1 million “.vn” domain names, strongly promoting the digital transformation process, digital economy and digital society.

In particular, along with the growth in the number of domain names and websites, it is extremely important to ensure the safety and reliability of the national domain name brand. As the host of the program, VNNIC is always proactive in carrying out the assigned tasks.

The key contents of APAC DNS Forum 2025 revolve around the application of domain name development solutions, especially national domain names, to help affirm the online presence of organizations and businesses in cyberspace, with creative development strategies and effective management policies, ensuring safety and reliability; developing and managing the safety and reliability of the domain name server system (DNS) - the heart of the internet, applying technology (AI, blockchain) to ensure the safety of DNS operations and domain name space, protecting users.

Speaking at the opening session of the Workshop, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong emphasized that the APAC DNS Forum 2025 held in Hanoi is a valuable opportunity for us to exchange, connect and cooperate in a core area of ​​global digital infrastructure.

We are entering a new era – the era of comprehensive innovation and profound digital transformation. In Vietnam, Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on “Breakthrough in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation” orients that by 2030, Vietnam will become a developing country with modern industry and high average income, and by 2045, it will become a developed country with high income.

An important content is to focus on developing digital infrastructure as a foundation for digital transformation. Internet infrastructure, including DNS infrastructure, is an important component of digital infrastructure. Managing to ensure the safety and reliability of the national DNS system, developing and popularizing the national domain name “.vn” to develop the digital economy and digital society is an important task.

The Internet will move to a new phase of the Internet of Things (IoT), Quantum Internet with technologies such as 5G/6G, IPv6, Bigdata, Cloud, AI, blockchain, Quantum computing, ... with an extremely large number of connections. Many new forms of connection, new services are born, however, Internet resources, domain names, DNS systems are always the identification layer - the starting point of all digital connections, playing an essential role in ensuring the reliability and safety of the digital space.

The APAC DNS Forum 2025 is a convergence of knowledge, technology and international cooperation. Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong hopes that the discussions here will contribute to promoting models and solutions for managing and developing resources, infrastructure and smart, safe internet services, adapting to the trend of science and technology development, innovation and global digital transformation.

At the same time, promote the effective application of new technologies such as DNSSEC, 5G/6G, IPv6, Bigdata, Cloud, AI, Block chain, Quantum computing... in managing, developing, ensuring safety and sustainability of DNS infrastructure systems; develop multilingual universality, creating a comprehensive, humane and inclusive cyberspace.

VNNIC Director Nguyen Hong Thang said: This year also marks an important milestone - 25 years of VNNIC's continuous contribution to Vietnam's internet development. Over the past quarter century, we have strived to establish a secure and reliable internet infrastructure from managing the country code top-level domain name ".vn", to promoting DNSSEC, supporting the transition to IPv6 and strengthening the national DNS system.

Today, the Vietnamese national domain name “.vn” ranks second in ASEAN with more than 660,000 domain names; Vietnam is in the global top 10 in IPv6 adoption with more than 65% of users accessing the internet via IPv6.

The theme of this year’s event is “For an Inclusive Internet: Connecting Everyone, Empowering Our Future”. The APAC DNS Forum 2025 brings together DNS experts and teams from across the Asia-Pacific region to exchange information, connect communities, and share best practices.

We believe that the discussions in this forum will foster innovative, multilingual, and secure DNS ecosystems, ensuring the internet remains a powerful enabler of growth, inclusion, and trust.
