Following the introduction of the leader of the Women's Union of Moc Nam commune, Duy Tien town, we visited the farm model of Ms. Pham Thi Thu, Head of the Women's Union of Yen Ninh village, who has turned an inefficient rice-growing area into a farm raising white-feathered Egyptian chickens with a revenue of hundreds of millions of VND/year. Thanks to her mastery of techniques and thorough investment, Ms. Thu's model of raising white-feathered Egyptian chickens with more than 6,000 chickens is bringing high economic efficiency.
Previously, Ms. Pham Thi Thu did many different jobs such as: planting rice fields, construction worker..., however, these jobs were often hard and the income was not high. Struggling to find a new direction to develop the economy, she realized that the Egyptian chicken farming model had the potential to bring high efficiency. In 2017, she began to learn and decided to switch to raising white-feathered Egyptian chickens. She boldly borrowed capital to invest, renovate the land, and build a barn to raise Egyptian chickens on an area of 600m2 with an initial number of 1,000 chickens.
Ms. Thu said: This breed of chicken has a lot of meat, high egg production, good resistance, and disease resistance... However, at first, due to lack of experience, her farm encountered many difficulties, leading to chickens getting sick and having to destroy a large number. Not discouraged, she diligently researched and learned from many different information channels, gradually finding ways to overcome the problem.
Thanks to her diligence and eagerness to learn, Ms. Thu has equipped herself with more knowledge and techniques for raising white-feathered Egyptian chickens; in particular, she focuses on selecting breeds. In addition to importing breeds from reputable, quality places, she also pays close attention to the techniques for caring for the chickens. Not only does she vaccinate all types of vaccines on schedule, the chicken coop system is also designed by Ms. Thu to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In addition, she also lines it with rice husks and spreads probiotics, thanks to which all the chicken manure is decomposed by bacteria, reducing the work of cleaning the coop. Ms. Thu cleans the coop every week to keep it cool and clean. Every 2 months, she replaces all the rice husks to ensure the safety of the chickens. Before raising a new batch, Ms. Thu usually leaves the coop empty for 1 - 1.5 months to carry out measures to disinfect and sterilize the coop. To increase the resistance of the chicken flock, Ms. Thu adds vitamins, probiotics, etc. to the chickens through water.
Applying the correct technical breeding process, the source of food and water was also controlled by Ms. Thu right from the beginning, helping the chickens develop healthily and grow quickly. When the chickens were 60 days old, she started to limit feeding to avoid the chickens becoming too fat, reducing the egg-laying rate, and at the same time preventing the chickens from laying eggs early. Ms. Thu said that this breed of chicken can lay eggs after about 4 months, from the 5th month will be the stage of laying a lot, this is the time when she started selling young chickens. Choosing to sell young chickens is a suitable and effective breeding direction, and also avoids the risks of unexpected diseases. Each chicken she sells costs from 80 - 120 thousand VND/chicken. The market for her family's chickens is mainly customers in and outside the province.
The model of raising white-feathered Egyptian chickens has helped Ms. Pham Thi Thu's family have a stable income of 350 million/year. Not only developing the family's economy, Ms. Thu also enthusiastically shares her experiences with people who want to learn about Egyptian chicken raising techniques. In the near future, Ms. Thu hopes to expand the scale and improve product quality to serve market demand.
Ms. Tran Le Quyen, President of the Women's Union of Moc Nam commune, said: Ms. Pham Thi Thu regularly participates and actively contributes to the activities and movements of the union. It can be said that Ms. Thu is a typical example of diligence, hard work, creativity in labor, production, and knowing how to strive to become rich legitimately. The achievements she has achieved today have contributed to beautifying the beautiful image of rural women, worthy for women members to learn and follow.
