The Dak Lak durian industry is facing many challenges as the consumer market shrinks, along with strict requirements on food safety and traceability. In this situation, the locality has proactively implemented solutions to improve production capacity and adapt to new requirements.

Crops bring high economic value

The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Lak province said that the old Dak Lak province alone has about 38,800 hectares of durian, of which the harvested area is about 22,600 hectares, the expected output in 2025 is estimated at about 400 thousand tons, an increase of about 100 thousand tons compared to 2024. The whole province has 266 growing area codes with an area of about 7,400 hectares, accounting for nearly 33% of the harvested durian area and 74% of the pure durian area; there are 39 fresh durian packaging facilities granted codes by China and 11 units granted export codes for frozen durian...

In recent years, durian has become one of the fastest growing and most exported industries in Dak Lak province in particular and the country in general, especially after signing the Protocol on plant quarantine requirements with China in 2022. The official export of durian to the Chinese market in recent times has brought high economic value, contributing to improving the lives of local people.

The family of Mr. Y Siet Ayun in Jung hamlet, Krong Pac commune, Dak Lak province has 2 hectares of land, previously only growing coffee, but for a long time the price of coffee was low, the price of agricultural materials increased so production was not profitable. About 10 years ago, with the guidance of Phuoc An Coffee Company, he intercropped more than 150 durian trees in the coffee garden. In recent years, the durian garden has yielded dozens of tons each year, each ton selling for 70-80 million VND. Thanks to that, his family was able to build a spacious house, buy a car and many other valuable items and vehicles. Or like the family of Mr. Tran Van Son in Ea Ring hamlet, Cu Pong commune, grows 12 hectares of durian. Each year his family harvests 140-150 tons of fruit, each ton selling for an average of 70-80 million VND depending on the time. Thanks to durian trees, thousands of farming households in Dak Lak have not only escaped poverty but also become rich.

Nguyen Hac Hien, Head of the Dak Lak Province Plant Department, said: With suitable weather, climate and soil conditions, durian trees in the area have grown strongly in terms of area, productivity and output in recent years. In the durian crop of 2023 and 2024, the value of each hectare of durian reached 1-1.2 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the profit reached about 700 million VND. Thanks to that, it has helped thousands of durian growing households, especially those growing 2-3 hectares or more, earn billions of VND each year.

Sustainable Development

The value of durian trees is so great that farmers are rushing to expand their acreage. However, the rapid development has also caused the durian industry to face many difficulties and challenges.

Mr. Le Anh Trung, Chairman of the Dak Lak Durian Association, said that in recent years, the Vietnamese durian industry has developed rapidly, affirming its position on the world export map. However, along with great opportunities are significant challenges regarding food safety, chemical control, heavy metal residues, traceability, etc., which are increasingly strict from the international market. For Vietnamese durian to truly reach the world and export sustainably, there is no other way than to join forces, unanimity, and comprehensive and transparent control from root to tip. To achieve that goal, it is necessary to focus on raising awareness, tightening control of chemicals and heavy metals, proactively saying no to banned substances in agriculture, and proactively controlling each garden before the goods leave the garden. In addition, the construction of laboratories right in Dak Lak province plays a very important role in early containment and is also the final step in the safety control chain. On the other hand, strongly apply information technology, transparently trace the origin of each exported durian. Build and expand the "green channel" production, packaging and export chains to spread widely, for a smart, responsible and sustainable agriculture.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuc, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Auto Agri Software Technology Joint Stock Company, shared: The growing area code is the property and history of the grower, but currently the grower does not pay attention to it, leading to many businesses taking advantage of the growing area code in the business process, greatly affecting the durian brand of Dak Lak province in particular and Vietnam in general. Therefore, local authorities and functional departments and branches need to promote propaganda work, raise farmers' awareness of building growing area codes according to Vietnamese standards to contribute to the sustainable development of the durian industry.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Lak province Nguyen Van Ha, to develop the durian industry sustainably, the most important issue is to ensure the interests of all parties in the chain; build a model for replication; check samples before harvest, growing areas and the capacity of packaging facilities to screen for risks, reduce fraud in durian production and trading. In addition, the People's Committee of Dak Lak province also regularly directs functional branches and localities to promote propaganda, training, and guidance for people to cultivate durian according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, HACCP, ISO:22,000 standards...; actively build growing area codes, packaging facility codes, traceability, and control of banned substance residues. The province has also called on and supported businesses to enhance the capacity of preliminary processing facilities, frozen storage, deep processing, brand building and trade promotion to ensure compliance with the regulations of importing countries; Promote the building of a close chain of links between farmers, businesses and exporters to ensure the interests of all parties. At the same time, regularly inspect, supervise and guide people in growing areas and packaging facilities to properly implement the regulations in the Protocol on durian exported from Vietnam to China...
