(Haiphong.gov.vn) - Information from Hai Phong Children's Hospital said that the General Surgery Department (Hai Phong Children's Hospital) has just received and successfully operated on 2 children with congenital anal defects.
Specifically, two children, TLN (4 months old) and PTMK (7 months old), were both diagnosed with an anal defect right after birth. As soon as they were admitted as newborns, N had a temporary colostomy performed on the abdominal wall by surgeons, and K had a fecal fistula dilated and scheduled for surgery when conditions were met. In K's case, due to family reasons, he returned for surgery later than the doctor's appointment.

According to doctors at Hai Phong Children's Hospital, anal malformation (anorectal malformation) is a rare malformation in newborns, about 1/4000 live births. When there is no anus, the rectum is interrupted and stool accumulates in the large intestine. The stool "finds" a way out and will leak out through a fistula (90% of children). This fistula can leak out to the perineum, into the urethra or bladder, vagina in girls... In other cases where there is no fistula, the intestine will be completely interrupted and intestinal obstruction will occur (about 10%). If all of these cases are not treated surgically, intestinal obstruction will lead to exhaustion and death.
According to medical experts, surgery to treat anal insufficiency is a difficult technique, requiring the surgeon to have a lot of skills and experience in surgery, and a deep understanding of the disease to be able to make a good diagnosis and appropriate surgical method. The most important thing is to manage, monitor, and treat the patient well after surgery so that the problem of defecation can function normally, ensuring a good quality of life for the child throughout his or her life.
Surgery to treat anal stenosis can be completed in a single operation or 3 operations depending on the disease. Currently, the application of laparoscopic surgery in treatment has brought many great improvements to patients, such as reducing surgery time, quick recovery, improving bowel function, very small and aesthetic surgical scars... In many cases, patients come back for a check-up after surgery, the surgical scars are almost invisible, all activities are the same as normal people.
Doctors at Children's Hospital recommend that families should monitor their child's bowel movements immediately after birth. If the child does not have a bowel movement within the first 24 hours, they should take the child to a pediatric hospital for examination and timely treatment.
