Having signs of abdominal pain and bloody stools for a while, Ms. HTL (95 years old, from Nam Dinh ) subjectively did not go to the doctor. When these signs became more frequent, with abdominal pain, Ms. L went to K Hospital for examination and was surprised to receive the results that she had a sigmoid colon tumor that required surgery.
95-year-old woman recovers quickly after surgery to treat gastrointestinal cancer.
Dr. Tran Duc Tho, Head of the Department of Surgery, Anesthesia and Resuscitation, K Hospital, said: For patients over 80 years old, many challenges are posed during the surgery such as surgical techniques, anesthesia during the 3-4 hour surgery, blood loss... However, the surgical team removed the 5cm lesion and preserved healthy cells. The surgery was successful, the patient recovered well, and is expected to be discharged after 7 days of treatment.
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, Deputy Director of Professional Affairs, Head of Abdominal Surgery Department I, K Hospital, shared that many families with elderly relatives over 70, 80 years old who are diagnosed with cancer often give up and do not seek treatment. Although age is one of the issues to consider when treating cancer, patients should not give up too quickly. If conditions allow and ensure the technique, surgery should still be performed to help improve the patient's quality of life.
Also according to Dr. Binh's recommendation, to prevent digestive tract cancer, people should limit eating a lot of meat and fat from animal protein; supplement enough fiber from barley, fruits, fresh vegetables, vitamins E, C, and A... and maintain an active lifestyle, exercise regularly.
People with a history of chronic colitis or gastritis, or a family member who has had gastrointestinal cancer (esophagus, stomach, colon), or when experiencing symptoms of unexplained weight loss, constipation, bloating, bloody stools, vomiting blood, etc. should see a doctor immediately for screening, timely detection and treatment.
Even when cancer is detected in elderly patients, even over 80 or 90, one should still be determined to cooperate with cancer specialists so as not to miss the best opportunity to cure the disease.
