According to the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Rach Gia Airport is a level 4C airport.

The Minister of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) has just signed Decision No. 301/QD - BGTVT approving the task of planning Rach Gia Airport for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
Accordingly, the planning perspective is determined to develop Rach Gia Airport to ensure meeting transportation needs, reasonably connecting with other modes of transportation; closely combining with ensuring national defense - security, safe exploitation; contributing to promoting the socio-economic development of Kien Giang province; meeting the development needs of the Vietnamese aviation market.
The planning objective is to study the planning scheme for the development of Rach Gia Airport in each phase until 2030 and vision to 2050; at the same time, propose a suitable investment roadmap to meet transportation needs and key solutions to implement the planning.
The planning principle is to ensure consistency and synchronization between the Rach Gia Airport planning and the Master Plan for the development of the national airport and seaport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, and other relevant plans.
The main contents of the Rach Gia Airport planning task are to survey, investigate, and collect necessary data for planning; investigate and collect past and current data of Rach Gia Airport; and update projects that have been and are being implemented at the Airport.
The planning also has the task of forecasting air transport demand; planning airspace, flight routes, and flight methods to serve airport exploitation; assessing the capacity and planning options for the Port, including the airport and ground areas as well as other related contents.
The planning unit is responsible for reviewing the approved planning, studying the planning, arranging the works to suit the future exploitation needs, in accordance with the Master Plan for the development of the national airport and seaport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by competent authorities; determining the nature, role, scale of the Port and basic indicators on land for the planning period and technical infrastructure...
The Ministry of Transport requests the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to direct the organization to select a consultant to develop the Rach Gia Airport Planning in accordance with the provisions of law, take responsibility for the selection results; ensure that the selected consultant meets the professional capacity requirements as prescribed in Article 17 of Decree No. 05/2021/ND-CP dated January 25, 2021 of the Government on management and exploitation of airports.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam is responsible for closely coordinating with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province and relevant agencies and units in the process of organizing planning, guiding the development and completion of sponsored products; responsible for receiving sponsored products which are planning documents; responsible for implementing the tasks of the planning agency after receiving the products, submitting them to the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) for appraisal and approval according to regulations.
It is known that the Rach Gia Airport Planning for the period up to 2015, with a vision to 2025, was approved by the Ministry of Transport in Decision No. 977/QD-BGTVT dated April 28, 2006.
Accordingly, Rach Gia Airport is planned as a 3C airport and a level II military airport, with a capacity of about 0.2 million passengers/year; by 2025 it is planned to be a 4C airport, with a capacity of about 0.3 million passengers/year; the land use plan is 200 hectares.
According to Decision No. 648/QD-TTg dated June 7, 2023 of the Prime Minister approving the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, a number of planning indicators for Rach Gia Airport have been identified: a level 4C airport; by 2030, it will meet a capacity of about 0.5 million passengers/year, with a vision to 2050, it will meet a capacity of about 1 million passengers/year; continue to maintain the planned land area of previous periods at 200 hectares.
Thus, the previous planning indicators of Rach Gia Airport have changed with the approved Airport System Planning, so it is necessary to soon organize the planning of Rach Gia Airport.
