A Korean Air plane collided with a Cathay Pacific plane as it prepared to take off at Hokkaido airport, Japan.
The collision occurred at around 5:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. Hanoi time) today at New Chitose Airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, an official from Korean Air said. The plane was carrying 298 people and was being pushed back from the parking lot by third-party ground vehicles in preparation for departure.
According to the official, the ground vehicle skidded due to heavy snowfall, causing the wing of the Korean Air A330 to collide with the tail of the Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific. Cathay Pacific confirmed that the collision occurred while the airline's plane was parked at the airport and there were no passengers or crew members on board.
Neither airline disclosed the extent of the damage. Images posted on social media showed minor damage to the wing of the A330 and a hole in the tail of the Cathay Pacific plane.

Firefighters were on the scene but found no fuel leaks. Hokkaido Airports, the airport operator, has not commented. Cathay Pacific said "flight CX583 from Sapporo to Hong Kong will not operate as planned."
Hokkaido has been hit by cold weather recently, with heavy snowfall warnings issued in several cities. At least 46 flights were canceled today due to the weather.
