Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa was covered by insurance when she had cancer.
Life insurance is a special product: when buying, customers often expect it to be valuable in case of illness or disease, so as not to become a burden to their relatives. At the same time, they also hope for peace and complete health, without having to use insurance.
However, there are risks that no one wants, but still suddenly come.
Steady cancer treatment, avoid debt thanks to insurance
Working as a primary school teacher in Hanoi , Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Hoa participates in life insurance with a premium of more than 20 million VND/year. To ensure full payment of premiums, she proactively arranges her spending and has never missed a deadline.
Two years after signing the insurance contract, she participated in a regular health check-up program organized by the school, and was suddenly informed that she had nasopharyngeal cancer. While before that, she had no symptoms, no cough, no sore throat... To be more certain, she went to see more doctors at a major hospital.
“When I received the biopsy results showing late-stage nasopharyngeal cancer, I was really shocked. It felt like the whole world had collapsed. I had just given birth less than a year ago and was still breastfeeding. I was afraid of having to leave my child when he was still too young to remember his mother’s face,” she confided. Not only was she worried that she would not be strong enough to overcome cancer, she was also afraid of becoming a burden to both sides of the family.
After stabilizing her mind, Ms. Hoa met a consultant and estimated the cost of treatment at about 300 million VND. At that time, her account had exactly 90 million VND left, with no other assets. Her parents gave her an additional 50 million VND, but she was still short. “A jumble of emotions, afraid of the disease, worried about money, and haunted by the fact that her child was too young,” she recalled.
With a jumble of thoughts, while being treated at Hospital 108, she also took the opportunity to contact Manulife Insurance Company for support. About a month after submitting the application, she was paid 600 million VND in insurance benefits for serious illness, and received medical and income subsidies of 4.5 million VND/month for 5 years. The total estimated compensation amount was nearly 1 billion VND.
“That payment helped me regain the necessary calmness, not having to struggle between illness and money, and proactively choosing better medical services,” said Ms. Hoa.
Back at school, she continued to take her medication every month and had regular health checks over the next few years. Most importantly, “I was able to get back to a normal life and mentality.”
“If I didn’t have insurance, I would still have to get treatment, but I would have to borrow money. If a patient like me keeps thinking “treat as much as possible”, “where is the money for radiation therapy”… it will be difficult to recover well, and it could be more severe”, Ms. Hoa shared.
Leave love for loved ones
Not everyone is lucky enough to go through life in peace and health. There are people who leave this world at a very young age.
“Tam was electrocuted. He passed away suddenly without a word,” said Tran Thi My Loan in tears, after completing the funeral for her younger brother (24 years old, from Phu Yen, now Dak Lak).
The family has nine children, growing up in poverty, with a mother who is constantly ill. Ms. Loan said that her younger brother is always worried and filial, saving all the money he earns to take care of his mother, rarely thinking about his own needs. However, listening to his sister's advice, in February 2025, Mr. Tran Quoc Phung decided to join an insurance contract at Bao Viet.
By the middle of this year, after only four months of participating in insurance, while working at a shrimp farm, Mr. Phung was unfortunately electrocuted, fell into the water and passed away at a very young age, without having time to say goodbye to his old mother and relatives, nor to fulfill his dream of having a small family of his own.
Upon receiving the news, Bao Viet Life Phu Yen said it had quickly paid out 800 million VND in death benefits. The insurance contract could not prevent the risk from happening, but it was the support and love the young man left for his relatives.
The journey of recovery from the brink of life and death
Selling vegetables at a small market near his home, Mr. Nguyen Van Thien (An Giang) and his wife are the pillars of the family. After his daughter was born and he watched her grow up, he wanted to avoid becoming a burden if he were to fall ill or have a life risk, so he decided to buy life insurance.
So since 2008, the couple bought a piggy bank, saved money in a disciplined manner every day, and had enough money to pay the insurance contract when it was due. Meanwhile, Mr. Thien's daughter also bought another insurance contract for her father.
One morning in late 2022, after waking up, Mr. Thien got out of bed, took a few steps and suddenly felt dizzy and fainted. Immediately after that, his relatives immediately took him to a nearby hospital for treatment, then transferred him to Ho Chi Minh City.
Amidst the anxiety surrounding his prolonged coma, the family contacted Prudential Life Insurance Company, which determined that Mr. Thien was permanently disabled and agreed to pay nearly 2 billion VND.
With the insurance money he received, he was assured to pursue good and suitable treatment options, persistently practicing physical therapy and acupuncture. More than a year later, he gradually recovered to the utmost happiness of his whole family.
Now, his health is almost back to normal. Every day, the couple goes to the market together, sets up shop, sells goods, and life is full of joy again. With the remaining money, they bought a few more hectares of rice fields to rent out.
