Last May, doctors at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Tien Yen District Medical Center) successfully treated an ectopic pregnancy, with a large fetus, equivalent to a gestational age of more than 8 weeks.
The patient is Ms. PTT (32 years old, in Nam Son commune, Ba Che district), admitted to the hospital because of fatigue, lower abdominal pain, nausea. After the doctor examined and took medical history, it was noted that: The abdomen was soft, the vagina was clean, there was no blood, the patient had a two-month delay in menstruation, but did not go to the doctor because the patient was taking emergency contraceptive pills.
Through the examination and paraclinical tests, the ultrasound results showed an image of an ectopic pregnancy. The length of the embryo was equivalent to a gestational age of over 8 weeks with a fetal heartbeat, the fetus was tense and could rupture at any time, so an emergency surgery was indicated. After nearly 1 hour of surgery, the entire fetus was removed from the corner of the uterine horn. The patient's health was stable after 3 days of treatment, the surgical wound was dry, he could move well, and could eat and drink.
Dr. Le Thu Hoai, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - Reproductive Health Care (Tien Yen Medical Center) said: “Ectopic pregnancy is a case where the egg is fertilized, implanted and develops outside the uterine cavity. This is the highest cause of death among obstetric complications in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Therefore, women should absolutely not skip the first important pregnancy check-up, which is the time when the period is about 2 to 4 weeks late, to confirm the pregnancy status, as well as early detection of dangerous abnormalities such as ectopic pregnancy. If an ectopic pregnancy is detected early, it can be treated medically, avoiding surgery and limiting complications. If the patient does not meet the criteria for medical treatment, they will have laparoscopic surgery.
Doctors at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital advise women on reproductive health.
To prevent pregnancy complications, women should visit reputable medical facilities for examination and inform their doctors in advance about their health problems during the previous pregnancy. During pregnancy, pregnant women should have a plan for examination and pregnancy management early, so that doctors can grasp the health status of the mother and fetus, to predict and prepare well for childbirth, and prevent risks during labor.
Accordingly, pregnant women must have at least 4 prenatal check-ups during pregnancy. The first check-up is during the first 3 months of pregnancy; the second check-up is during the middle 3 months; the next 2 check-ups are during the last 3 months. In addition to the 4 check-ups mentioned above, the mother must have additional check-ups at any time if she has any unusual symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bleeding, vaginal discharge, swelling, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, etc.
During prenatal checkups, pregnant women may also need to have their health checked with tests: Blood count, blood biochemistry, immunity (HIV, hepatitis B), urine, ultrasound, obstetric monitoring...; monitor the mother's weight, measure the mother's heart, fetal heart, mother's blood pressure, uterine height and abdominal circumference to monitor the development and health of the fetus.

In recent times, the provincial health sector has strengthened the work of examining and managing obstetrics according to regulations by improving the quality of health care from the provincial level to the grassroots level; proactively developing plans to ensure that pregnant mothers choose a reasonable and safe place to give birth; implementing comprehensive essential care (cesarean section and blood transfusion), prioritizing the contents of emergency treatment of obstetric complications to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality.
Along with that, it is necessary to strengthen examination and care for pregnant women and newborns in the first week and 42 days after birth. Proactively detect and intervene early in pathological cases in mothers and fetuses during pregnancy, standardize essential care skills during and after birth at all levels; regularly maintain emergency obstetric surgery at all levels...
