Katie Cotton, Apple's longtime communications director who created the company's signature secretive style, died last week.

“We are deeply saddened by Katie’s passing,” Apple said in a statement on April 10.

“She was an extraordinary person and made countless contributions during her two-decade career at Apple. Our thoughts are with her loved ones and all who had the opportunity to work with her,” Apple said in a statement.

Cotton was appointed Apple's vice president of communications in 1996, a role she held until her retirement in 2014. She helped develop the company's communications strategy and organize high-profile launch events. Cotton is known for supporting Jobs during the CEO's health problems.

Cotton left the company about two years after Tim Cook succeeded Jobs as CEO. Cotton's tenure at Apple also coincided with one of the most remarkable turnarounds in tech history, as Apple recovered from near bankruptcy to become the most valuable company in the world .

In 2014, Cotton told the press that leaving Apple would be one of the most difficult decisions of her career. “This is hard for me, Apple is a part of my heart,” Cotton said. The CEO said at the time that she wanted to “spend time with my children.”

“Katie was a formidable figure in her 18 years at Apple,” tech journalist Walt Mossberg shared his condolences on Twitter. Cotton was a “critical partner” to Steve Jobs, and Jobs relied heavily on her judgment, according to Mossberg.

Cotton is the key person behind Apple's secretive style of information, according to Apple Insider . Cotton's tight-lipped and selective approach to what he says has been effective, creating demand for Apple news and then limiting supply.

In an online obituary, Cotton's family said she "passed away peacefully" on April 6 and that she was "recognized as one of the most remarkable women in public relations and marketing in the technology industry."
