Recently, we had the opportunity to meet Mr. Nguyen when he was on a business trip with the diplomatic delegation of Le Havre City (France) to visit and work with Phu Yen. Looking back at his achievements, the 34-year-old associate professor shared that no matter which country he studies and lives in, national pride and self-respect always come first, which is the driving force that urges him to strive to overcome many difficulties and gradually assert himself.
Journey to the Eiffel Tower
Mr. Nguyen is currently an associate professor of Management Science, specializing in Marketing and International Business at the Academy of Administrative Management of the University Jean Moulin Lyon III, Lyon (France). A former student of the French specialized class of the 2004-2007 school year of Luong Van Chanh High School for the Gifted, he is currently the director of two programs: a high-quality master's degree in International Business and a 3rd-year bachelor's degree in Global Management and Business. In addition, Dr. Nguyen is also a member of the school's scientific council. To achieve this position, the young man born in 1989 has made constant efforts to assert himself.
Dr. Nguyen shared: When I was in the final year of my 4th year of my Bachelor's degree in International Business Administration, I was selected by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City to defend my thesis in French. My research paper achieved the highest score in the class and I was honored to receive a master's scholarship from the Francophone University Organization (AUF). I chose Lille 2 University (France) for my master's program and switched to scientific research with the goal of improving my limited knowledge.
During his master's studies, Nguyen was inspired by colleagues and professors with rich knowledge and culture, so he cherished the idea of researching for a doctoral program. Right in the stage of writing his master's thesis, he won a doctoral scholarship from the French Embassy in Vietnam to research the intersection and movement of global consumer culture in Vietnam. After graduating from the doctoral program at Lille 2 University, Nguyen was accepted into the postdoctoral program of a famous private business administration school in France. During a year working at the school, he was invited by a former colleague at Lille 2 University to give a guest lecture. Nguyen's lectures were highly appreciated by students and Nguyen became a contract lecturer at Lille 2 University.
“Teaching at a public university helped me realize that the public environment suited my research orientation and curiosity. From there, I applied to public universities in France. Thanks to the uniqueness of my research papers, the diversity of my research topics, as well as the quality of my teaching that was highly appreciated by French students and colleagues, I was accepted to teach at Jean Moulin Lyon III Public University. After a year of probation, I was awarded the title of associate professor by the French State,” Nguyen confided.

Efforts to assert themselves on the path of research
In the French public academic environment, Vietnamese people holding the position of professor or associate professor are not rare. However, in the fields of economics, management and social sciences, the number of Vietnamese people in this position can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The main reason to explain the scarcity is the proficiency in using the language to have the ability to teach and the irreplaceable uniqueness in research. To be able to use academic French, Nguyen read a lot of research books and popular magazines, watched some TV programs favored by French intellectuals; through that, Nguyen grasped the information that French intellectuals are interested in. Thanks to reading and watching such programs, Nguyen understood and used academic French in life as well as at work. Nguyen's colleagues often say that he speaks French better than native speakers because he can understand and participate in daily conversations of academics.
In terms of irreplaceable originality in research, Nguyen is one of the very few Vietnamese people doing research on economics, management and social sciences in France with a research orientation on the global cultural industry in general and East Asia in particular. In his research, he often uses a combination of research methods and theories developed by French and British philosophers, sociologists, and anthropologists to study how cultural content is created and disseminated in the market. In addition, he also incorporates Asian ideologies in his research. Thanks to that, his research is highly appreciated for its originality. His doctoral thesis was therefore nominated by the school to compete for the best doctoral thesis of the Northern region of France. A recent study of his was also honored as an excellent research at the 2022 academic conference of the Francophone Association for Multinational Management.
Building a bridge connecting two localities
Along with the diplomatic delegation of Le Havre City led by Ms. Caroline Leclercq, Deputy Mayor in charge of international relations, Nguyen recently returned to his hometown of Phu Yen after more than 3 years of not returning due to COVID-19. Nguyen acted as an interpreter for the Deputy Mayor in charge of international relations of Le Havre City during the visit and working session with Ms. Cao Thi Hoa An, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Council and leaders of a number of departments and branches. In addition, Nguyen was also a tour guide for Ms. Caroline Leclercq to visit a number of schools in the province that organize French teaching and learning; a bridge for the Deputy Mayor in charge of international relations of Le Havre City to meet and talk with French students of the province.
Nguyen said: “Through the conversation with the provincial leaders during this visit to my hometown, I saw the potential for green tourism development in Phu Yen and the province's strong determination to strive to make tourism a key economic sector by 2030. Phu Yen has factors such as landscape, people, and environment to build a green tourism and sustainable tourism model. However, Phu Yen needs a good, specific strategy. I can be a bridge between French experts and Phu Yen in building a green tourism city model.”
Sharing his plans for the near future, the 34-year-old associate professor said that he will return to Vietnam more often in the near future because he has been invited to lecture at several universities. In addition, because his research programs revolve around the French and Vietnamese markets, returning to Vietnam regularly helps Nguyen grasp the rapid movements and developments of this market, especially the changes in consumer culture, as well as the culture of Vietnamese youth. This will help him come up with innovations and strategies to promote the development of the market; at the same time, bring the new voice and culture of Vietnamese youth to the world through his articles in foreign professional magazines.
Recently, the diplomatic delegation of Le Havre City and the leaders of Phu Yen Province had a meeting to discuss short-term student exchange cooperation between the two cities; thereby helping students have the opportunity to exchange and learn about the culture and language of France and Vietnam, helping to develop the bilateral relationship between the two localities. I hope to be a bridge to promote this program in the near future.
