Restoring, preserving and promoting the pottery making craft of the Churu people

In order to contribute to preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province has issued a plan to support research, restoration, preservation and promotion of the pottery making craft of the Churu ethnic group in Pro commune, Don Duong district, under the National Target Program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in 2024.

The plan aims to research and survey in Pro commune (Don Duong district) and identify the good traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities that are at risk of being lost, synthesize documents as a basis for research to serve the work of preserving and promoting traditional culture and developing tourism. Document the intangible cultural values of the Churu ethnic group through reports, videos , and images as a basis for research, storage, and promotion of values.

To survey and collect information for research purposes, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province will coordinate with relevant units to conduct surveys, inspections and collect information to preserve and promote cultural heritage in villages in Pro commune. At the same time, the survey team will coordinate with cultural and social officers to conduct surveys and interviews with people, focusing on local subjects, practitioners and preservers to collect information on traditional culture in the locality.

The authorities also organized a class to teach Churu pottery making to about 30 ethnic minorities in Pro commune, mainly young and middle-aged people. Along with that, they invited prestigious artisans who understand and possess the skills to practice the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities in Pro commune, excellent artisans, village elders, village chiefs, and prestigious people of Don Duong district to teach young people about traditional heritages of the nation,...

At the same time, from June 2024, the Department of Cultural Management - Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province will coordinate with relevant units to produce documentary films on pottery making processes to serve conservation and propaganda work.

Pro Commune, Don Duong District has a population of more than 7,000, of which 61% are ethnic minorities, of which the pottery craft of the Churu people has existed for a long time. The pottery craft creates a unique cultural feature of the ethnic group here, unique from the production process, the way of creating, and the way of firing. In order to restore, preserve and promote the pottery craft of the Churu people, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province will coordinate with relevant units and localities to organize the implementation of tasks to ensure progress and efficiency./.
