Few cars capture the spirit of the golden age of racing, and Porsches from the 1960s were machines that combined beauty and pure power. The Carrera GTS, better known by its internal code 904, remains one of the most valuable road-legal sports cars of the era. Now, six decades later, Dutch startup Aerfal Automotive wants to recreate the legend by restoring the classic car (restomod), combining modern design and engineering with Porsche DNA.
French car designer Alan Derosier is responsible for reviving the car, having worked on projects such as the Stratos-inspired Kiska APG-1 supercar and Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien for Dakar. CGI expert Antoine Brigot, who is in charge of 3D for Avatr, is responsible for the modeling. The Porsche 904 Carrera GTS is a GT sports car produced in Germany in 1964 and 1965. This sports car could be driven not only on the race track but also on public roads. The car was sold as Carrera GTS not the internal code name 904 because Peugeot owned the rights to the "x0y" numbering. 106 904 Carrera GTSs were built to be certified as Group 3 GT racing cars in the 2-litre category. The car was used by the factory team in the World Sportscar Championship from 1964 to 1966.
In addition, many private teams raced the Porsche 904 in these international competitions as well as national championships, such as the German Road Racing Championship, especially in the 2-liter GT category. The exterior retains the original's golden ratio of engine and seductive curves, with subtle tweaks to the cooling vents, LED lights, and classic alloy wheels. The doors open along with most of the roof, providing easy access to the two-seat cabin. The interior will please fans of the analog era with its minimalist dashboard, retro clocks, and combination of leather and titanium. With a production run of just over 100 cars, finding a Porsche 904 chassis is not too difficult or expensive. To complete this special car, the engineering team has cooperated with the big guys. In which, Multimatic reinforced the chassis, Tuthill took care of the suspension and configuration. Parts from Brembo, Michelin, BBS ensure performance and reliability according to standards.
The Porsche 904 is reborn with Cosworth's input from the legendary flat-8 engine from the original race car. This air-cooled, naturally aspirated engine has been enlarged from 2.0L to 4.0L, producing 400 horsepower. According to Aerfal Automotive, “it’s not about chasing numbers, it’s about creating an engine with a ‘soul’, a sound and a feeling that connects the driver directly to Porsche’s original racing heritage.” Aerfal is currently working on the 904 and will be taking orders soon. Pricing, production numbers and delivery times have yet to be revealed.
